No Internet...... apparently!

Morning all,

Windows 10 1809. We've had three PCs in the last week who are presenting as not having internet access, but then the second you open the PROXY settings (not doing anything with them, just opening the window) it then all works! One was trying to access YouTube using Chrome, and then other two were both trying to host a TeamViewer session.

Anyone else seen this?

Standard warning - 1809 is long past EoL, so any advice I'd give is tempered by that (unless you're using LTSC).

This indicator in Windows doesn't actually stop much from working - the one I've seen is driver downloads from Device Manager. Otherwise, even though it can't access the site that it uses to test connectivity, it should still actually have access.

We are using LTSC.

Sorry I wasn't clear - I don't mean the indicator, it actually had no Internet access until opening the PROXY settings screen.

Yes, we're also seeing this with 1809 and 1904... network icon is displaying no internet access but in reality they do have internet.

Started to see this a couple of weeks back and it's very random so far.

Yup we see it and running LTSC2021.

Just try pinging 8.8.8.8 or Google and/or ping the default gateway if your gateway is setup to allow ping.

See if it is dns or ip related then go from there. If you do not get a response from pinging external FQDNs at least confirm if it is resolving the hostname where it should.

I had this way back, but it was related to when I thought I had removed the proxy - the workstation would not 'action' the new settings until I ran a script that included calling the 'wininet.dll'

Out of curiosity, does the code below make any difference on an affected PC?

Without doing anything - assuming this PC is not currently able to access the internet, start and stop the WinHttpAutoProxySvc service (you can do this remotely if you prefer).

net stop WinHttpAutoProxySvc && net start WinHttpAutoProxySvc

Just had another. The PC has been in use throughout the day, suddenly no internet access. No websites would load in any browser. Tried to ping 8.8.8.8 and got a sensible response. Wasn't in front of EduGeek so forgot the stop and start thing.

Pressed "Start", typed PROXY and pressed enter. While the PROXY settings window was appearing, the browser in the background loaded the webpage I had attempted to get to with without me telling it to.

Weirdness......

@schoolsBBroadband with Netsweeper. I'm assuming it isn't connected with that though as it only ever affects one person.
Could it be a corrupt user account? It can happen.

I might be looking at this from the wrong angle but what happens if you move said user into a different OU in AD and apply different proxy settings. Do the Proxy settings change?

Could it be that the proxy isnt detecting the authentication from that particular user.

It's a totally random user it happens to, and it's never happened to the same person twice. We don't auth on the proxy.

That's the one which typically makes the icon in the system tray mis-report. These three actually wouldn't access the internet.

We found adobe creative cloud would not login or update when the NCSI reported no internet.

I’d rectify this to be honest, even if it only causes a bit of user confusion it’s a quick fix to implement.

We don't have this problem. The icons are reporting that they do have internet access, it just doesn't work.

Grasping at straws here, but not a DHCP? Duplicate IP somehow being handed out or a VLAN clash?

Or DNS, just because it's always DNS.

I'm guessing not DHCP (or even DNS on this occasion!) as everything else networky works fine, and it is literally opening the PROXY settings window which makes the internet spring in to life.
