It's a bit of a not-very-good thread title, but it appears the Queen may be quite unwell with many senior royals making their way to Balmoral as fast as they can - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-62834633

Please do not use this thread for political comments and keep them out of this discussion (I shall be watching closely), but I do hope she's just 'unwell' and can pull through, but by all accounts there is a lot of running around behind the scenes :(

Though nothing official right now, I think she may have already gone, bless her.

 

There's a steady stream of royals heading northward, notes were passed along the front benches of the commons during a debate rather than waiting for the session to end.

BBC One is on rolling coverage from BBC News. They're not showing Huw Edwards as anchor, but everyone else who has had screen time has been wearing sombre black with matching ties (the sign interpreter included).

 

I was reading this article earlier and a lot of boxes have already been checked.

If she has gone, they are unlikely to announce it until the 6 o'clock news. At the very least, they will allow William's children to leave school - the press were going to be there anyway with it being their first day at that school. The day of the funeral will likely be a national holiday

Indeed, it may well be that a news embargo will be in place until everyone is where they are required to be.

Yes, I think a plane full of Royals has only just landed up there and I am expecting the announcement to happen after they get to Balmoral and pay their respects.

Scheduled programmes for BBC 1 have been cancelled, and they are now showing Huw Edwards and Nicholas Witchell chatting in the London studio, with Buckingham Palace and the gates of Balmoral in vision.

 

Could well be a "holding program" and preparations for the six o'clock news.

The death of HM Queen Elizabeth II has been formally announced :(

 

Now got King Big Ears. Also Camille she not be know as Queen this was started at marriage.

RIP and thoughts are with her family. She's been such a beacon of stability to so many throughout the years, and I hope the Monarchy do everything they can to ensure that such stability throughout the commonwealth continues into and beyond William's reign.

 

A sad day.

She’ll be missed. What an awesome lady she was.

 

Over here in Wales, there is a divide as to whether the royal family is ‘our’ royal family, but she was still somebody to respect and admire not because of her office, but because of her actions, for so long.

I think that's what you call 'putting in a shift'. What a remarkable life's work. How many rich, famous and powerful people must she have met in her lifetime? Every single one of them, whether a President, Prime Minister, multi-billionaire or movie star, will have been the less famous, less respected, minor party in those encounters. It's hard to believe that one woman could so quietly outperform the entire world's supply of ego, ambition and malice.

 

I do wonder whether history will just carry on calling her The Queen.

Its unlikely to be a national holiday. Employers have discretion about whether or not to give people the day off.

 

Also tradition is to hold the funeral 10 days after her passing, which would be Sunday 18th which probably won't be the case, so it's likely it will be held on the Saturday 17th.

Very sad indeed. I'm not a royal fan but it made me tear up especially with Huw's reaction to the news. She was a brilliant lady and I still had a lot of respect for her.

 

A lot of things are changing and so far it's been a really rough couple of years, this was the cherry on top I'm sure. She'll be missed by millions.

Finding all the cancellations a bit hard like the last night of the proms when life has to continue after death.

:mod: @nicholab and anyone else who is inclined to go away from the tone of this thread please take note that this is a huge change. Few people in this country have ever known anyone other than Queen Elizabeth II as monarch of this country. The status quo has been rocked at an already difficult time for this country and even those with no particular fondness for the monarchy are recognising that. This is not the right place to air gripes; there are are other social media platforms available.

 

This thread will continue in a respectful way.

Found myself more effected than this that i'd thought i'd be. Cried when news was announced and again this morning listening to the radio.

The currency continues. New currency will feature the King.

 

Stamps will remain valid. New stamps will feature the King.

 

Those of us old enough to remember decimalisation will recall that our coinage used to feature the heads of many previous monarchs.

I do remember in the 70's growing up that we had one and two shilling coins with former kings heads on as legal currency (5p and 10p pieces) and I'm sure there was another (sixpence piece possibly) you could use.
