20 watt idle and peaking just over 30w under full load. (These are 4th gen intel)

 

So my advice don’t bother with timer plugs if it’s a modern device and energy settings are setup correctly.

 

I'd say that was a *lot* an m1 macbook uses 7w at idle.

 

I'd guess at 34p/Kwh a 20w desktop would cost

((.34×24×365)/1000) * 20 = £60 per year to run at idle.

Imagine if you had hundreds of them without shutting down!

Depends how much power sleep uses. And how much power starting up uses. What other resources apart from power are being used? If they're sleeping what's the security problem?

Scheduled Task set on every user PC on site to force shut down at 8:30PM each evening.

 

I only see shutting down as a plus. Gives chance for group policies to apply correctly which require a reboot, potentially reduces issues due to long uptimes

Monthly reboot is usually enough, as long as you don't let 100s of people log on and not log off again

 

Ah yes the dreaded switch user. My record was 6 users logged in at once :) This was more apparent when we used roaming profiles though, as people didn't like logging out due to long-ish login times. Using local profiles now, much better

Also a pain when users left them selves logged in and then forgot their password, that and users leaving projectors blearing at night was enough for us to do nightly shutdowns at a previous employment and it got the backing of SMT. Edited by Davit2005

We have laptops here, so have set the timed off function on all our projectors, so they turn off after 5 minutes of no input. The slight remaining catch is if you put it on Freeze then disconnect/turn off the PC, the frozen image stays on screen all night.

This happened to us over the summer. I had my two weeks off at the beginning of the holidays then came back to find a projector had been on freeze for two weeks.

We had a brief power cut in the first week of the holidays. I'm not necessarily advocating you copy this, but it certainly helped eliminate kit which had been left on :-)

As far as I know, computers that are off are not vulnerable to network attacks. This reduces the risk of overnight cyber threats. So, if your school does some research projects, it's a good point to keep in mind. If the computers are off then they can;t do any updates etc

 

Also - they have to be switched on - which takes longer than just logging in

 

WHen I taught in Secondary - we had the computers on Wake-on-LAN so they could all be shutdown by either me or the IT Tech before we went home at night

 

Then first thing in the morning we could start up one roonm at a time and check every one was working before lessons started

 

Not perfect - but pretty good

 

Before we had a system which would do the above the computer were often switched off - but it often caused problems in the first lessons they were used in

mostly due to them being used by kids - in some way

 

Once they just had to log in a lot of the problems went away

 

 

There was a question about power usage - the reason they were all being switched off in the first place

we put a power monitor on one of the PCs when it was shutdown but with wake-on-lan enabled - power usage was minimal

They do say the best defense against a cyber attack is to have the computer turned off... unplugged and berried in concrete.

But on a more serious note. If you've got WOL set up (which most of us probably do) then it's fairly believable that an attacker could boot the PCs. In fact I could totally see a situation where an attack WOLs the desktops, infects them, and shuts them down again.

Why are your client computers compromised in the first place? You don't have open ports to them from the internet. You don't let people run code you didn't install on them. And they got updates installed because you have strict time limit settings.

As to startup times, use hibernate/sleep
