Moving file server permissions issue

Hello

 

I have a file server on 2012 r2 which needs to be upgraded so I decided to attach the storage drive to a 2016 server and re setup the GPOs and shares on the network.

 

Unfortunately for some reason when you a user goes into their own network share (\\fileserver\staffhome\%USERNAME%) they are unable to rename files already created before it was moved.

 

The error comes up

 

"An unexpected error is keeping you from renaming the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with his problem.

Error 0x80070780: The file cannot be accessed by the system"

 

Am I missing something?

Have they got correct permissions on the old files?

They have. So I have looked deeper into it and the file server used to have de dupe on, which has now been turned off. I have swapped the drives back to the old server and users can access the files fine. I think I am going to copy all files to a new share and start fresh. I'm convinced the shares are a bit corrupt!!

2012 R2 to 2019/2022 is a very easy in-place upgrade - have you thought about giving that a go? I’ve done 20+ servers this summer doing just that, including file servers.

Are these 'older' physical servers or VMs..?

 

If physical, have you found any driver issues (raid controllers etc)?

 

Also for the OP, is this what dedupe does, the file you may see in a users folder is a placeholder for the actual file. I think there would be other folders that need to be moved or it might just not work if the new Server doesn't have any way to know where he original file is. I don't use dedupe so not sure how it actually works, but found this:

Mostly VMs, couple of old physical servers (HP gen 6 being the oldest). No driver issues - the only missing driver out of the box was sorted by using an old x64 one.
