Video editing

Apologies if the wrong topic area.

 

I am in need of some video editing software for use at home, ideally free but not found anything yet where I am piece various bits of video together, cut and trim videos and produce a final piece.

 

I presume the likes of adding in text/pictures is the norm in most cases but just need something that does the basic job so any recommendations?

 

I've got a bunch of GoPro and other footage I want to edit but it's not something I do much off, might have 4 or 5 videos a year in total.

I used Shotcut for a couple of videos last year. Really simple to use and free to download but has the tools to make the videos look more professional than some of the other apps.

Davinchi Resolve would be worth looking at, I used Premiere since version 4.2 but switched over. I don't do a lot, jus some Youtube stuff (as a hobby/pastime). It might be overkill for what you need.

 

I have an old Xeon ThinkServer packed with SSDs, NVidia GT 730Ti and 24GB RAM and it does pretty well for what I need.

DaVinci Resolve is the only thing you need. It is free to download and incredibly powerful.

I use it for every bit of video work I do.

It has an incredibly intuitive interface which I find far superior to the likes of Premiere Pro.

It also comes with an excellent audio suite and a really decent FX engine.

Second for Davinci Resolve

Free without the bells and whistles if you want the bells and whistles buy the full version with a one off payment.

Unlike Premier Pro you have to subscribe.

If you want to learn how to use the interface then I recommend a watch of these youtubers, they made by time spent messing about so much easier.

I also vouch for Davinci Resolve. VERY good software and updated semi often. I use it to edit Youtube videos and it has everything I could ask for. The Chroma key/green screen feature is also excellent once you get the hang of it.

I just built a Windows 11 22H2 image which included something called ClipChamp. Looks a decent little editor.

Microsoft has acquired Clipchamp, I think to finally move on from Movie Maker > Video Editor and give Windows a better built-in app. AFAIK it's available on the store for Windows 10 also.

 

In fact when launching the original Windows 10 Video Editor it now recommends installing Clipchamp.

 

Reviews are mixed...

 

EDIT: Just had a quick look and it appears that it needs a sign-in and to be used with an account (MS/Google/Email) and seems to suggest it will be using their website for some reason (cookies/data/info)...?
