Apple discontinue the iPod after 20 years

I mean, it’s not surprising but it’s a bit of a shame to see the line go. I suppose it’s impressive that it lasted as long as it did.

Apple seem to have been doing a lot of discontinuing of late, first OSX Server, now the iPod, what's next Apple TV?

It's a shame but also a surprise it lasted this long. Although I think with the interest older iPods (the non-touch versions especially) still get, I bet they'd make a killing bringing back one with a click wheel. I still like using mine occasionally as it's nice to have a dedicated music player that I can use without interruptions. It's also the device that got a lot of people into Apple products, myself included.

Though I have an iPhone, my in-car music is all iPod managed (an iPod Video and a Classic with an SSD in it). Just as well as music playback on iPhone with iOS 15.4 has gone to pot - no gapless playback any more!

They will probably become collectors items in 20 years time. Sadly, with the introduction of smart phones the MP3 player market crashed. There are still devices out there and they are popular with gym bunnies, but these are often smaller slimmer models.

Mind you, if that means you don't have to use iTunes anymore there is a silver lining to every cloud

I have sold some old iPods on eBay recently and got good prices for them.

The way things are going, I'd be tempted to have an old "feature" phone, and then buy a click wheel iPod with 5G built in, paid for via some kind of Apple Music sub, that had integrated AirPods in device.

 

A bit like the Mighty for Spotify, but good.

I have sold some old iPods on eBay recently and got good prices for them.

I may have bought one or two on eBay the last couple of years. They're good fun to take apart, put new batteries in and replace spinning disks with adapters and SD cards. Still totally usable!
