There is another advantage to this; and I've had it done in two suites here. The switch is at the teachers' desk - to guarantee focus from the kids, turn their monitors off.

 

Beware the Biology department freezer. If that gets turned off, you are going to be very unpopular.

I would just keep confiscating them and hiding them if I were you. This is utterly ridiculous.

This is one of the most bizarre ideas I've come across. Network switches are manufactured to work 24/7/365. They are not a fire risk simply running, so long as you follow good electrical safety practices - PAT testing, fixed circuit testing when required etc...

 

I find it a little bizarre that a site manager has the management power to force the implementation of this, overriding the actual needs of the organisation. Schools do not work on a fixed time. What happens when Ofsted are due to come in, and everyone stays late/comes in early? Nothing is on, and your own hours most likely don't cover you coming in early to fiddle with that stuff.

It won't be the site manager going round sorting the computer issues logged when staff cannot turn on their PCs. Been there, done that, how many times I've been called to a PC or connected device that was either not plugged in or switched off at the wall outlet Edited April 5, 2022 by Davit2005

When we've done timers for TVs before, I've added an hour extra at the beginning and end of the day to take this into account. Might work as a compromise.

Tell them to take it up with the site team directly if it's them who's implemented it.

 

IT aren't accountable if it was done by other teams.

Take photos and add them to the ticket with a reference to every single occurrence the issue was caused by timers. Then report to SLT the impact and make them do their jobs of leading and managing.

Have they put the whole cab on a timer or put timers on each switch that plugs into the cab's power switch? If they have put the whole cab on a timer then you need to put down getting them changed to fused spurs.
