Gaming Consoles For House

Hi All,

 

I have never been really into gaming on computers or consoles, so I am looking for a bit of advice, my grandkids are both under 10 and I am looking to get a console for the house for when they visit, but I am just not up to date when it comes to consoles and what I should be looking at.

I am looking at purchasing 2nd hand, the one grandson has a Nintendo switch and a couple of games and also loves watching those stupid Minecraft videos on youtube which I have blocked at home because it drives me nuts listening to screeching Americans playing it on YouTube so its blocked.

 

Any advice appreciated even if its don't do it

My 6yo has been nagging the hell out of me for a console. Unbeknownst to me, my wife is a reformed 90s console gamer, so we've bought second hand Nintendo Wii for Wii sports and Mario games, and a second hand Megadrive Mini with the 40 games included.

 

We're playing the 'under 13' card hard for him wanting to to play fortnite/roblox/minecraft because a lot of his friends play those games with older siblings.

Intel NUC with Batocera on it. Fill it with retro games That's what I've done. I've got about 7000 games from nes, snes, n64, ps1, atari, amiga, old arcade mame games, gameboy. Then connect an xbox controller over bluetooth to it, or buy some usb retro controllers like SNES ones.

 

Instant fun... of course obtaining the roms of these games isn't strictly legal unless you own the physical media, so I'm obliged to say i own the media.....

 

I've got a decent nuc that can even run WiiU games like donkey kong tropical freeze lol.... although, it's not as smooth as playing it on a wiiu.

Have they got a console at theirs? You could buy the same console, use their account to log in and they can bring their games etc.

 

Or find cheap old consoles on Facebook Marketplace/CEX.

No they just have the switch.

Been looking at CEX they have a local store to us.

If both grandsons are mostly over at the same time and you want super low effort then you could just have a look at getting the dock/controller for the switch so they can plug it into your tv and play together.

 

I'd probably go for a xbox1/PS4 which you should be able to get second hand at a reasonable price, both of which have a pretty good back catalogue and can play newer games if they want (XB1 probably has a better range of retro games and would be cheaper).

I think a second hand wii from CEX are quite cheap these days and so are most of the games. The Wii sports, Mario Kart and Mario Galaxy games are quite fun. This is what my son was playing around 6.

While it's not exactly cheap (or readily available at the moment), the Steam Deck might be a compelling device, with Switch like portability and by all accounts (review embargo only lifted yesterday), a decent PC gaming experience. But as it's still in the pre-order phase and not yet shipping, it might be worth waiting if it's something you wanted to consider.

 

Aside from that, a second hand Xbox One or PS4 would be a good option, with second hand games also coming in cheap from the likes of CEX. You could also look at emulator devices, to play retro games.
