No RAM or CPU upgrade available but we can install an SSD to replace the HDD... Can I do this without having to reinstall all the software, accounts, other random bs... A clone would be nice. I have a WD blue SSD that is 500GB (vs the installed 1tb hdd) the WD comes with acronis but it's probably windows only... cheesr help blah.. 1
pooley Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 I have literally just done this. Used an offline hdd cloner, I beleive the old drive needs to be the same size or smaller than the new ssd. I have used Carbon Copy Cloner software in the past too. 1
3s-gtech Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 I did this with our 2014 Mac Minis - the original shipped HDDs are 5400rpm and were rubbish when new. Carbon Copy Cloner on each, and the fiddle of swapping the disk. Pretty easy overall. 2

Ours is pretty much just a caching server, but I needed to use AC2 to reset an old iPad, earlier this week, and it took hours! I ended up having to leave it running overnight. Putting an SSD in should make some difference, at least.

I used CCC6, the source was the 1tb mac drive the destination was the 500gb wd SSD. (the SSD was erased to apfs first) the task too 2 hours... The drive does not boot. I followed youtubes and written directions no secret steps. what gives.. the mac just starts with a question mark... to copied drives has all the files but not the same structure as the original... it should be called carbon copy copier.. as it didn't clone jack!
DalekSec Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 If you're copying from a larger drive to a smaller drive you need to make sure you have the software set to copy raw data iirc (in clonezilla its DD copy i think... ) as if it does partitions it will fail due to a partition being larger than the destination
