Wireless/battery camera for in loft

Nah rats are known for loft living one thing about having rats is you won't have mice nor any other small animals for that matter... (not sure that helps mind!). You can take a loan of my Cockerpoo he loves getting hold of em!

 

Rats can be notoriously difficult to get in a trap and if a rat finds a dead rat near food they will generally leave that food well alone an all...

 

When I was a fair bit younger and a lot less wise. We used to air rifel them down on the farm, then we thought that using a whaling harpoon would be a good idea one day. We missed the rat smashed a massive hole in the back of the barn, while my mate found himself about 30ft from where we started lacking a couple of teeth. All good fun until someone loses an eye :-D

 

So to sum up don't use a bazooka to swat a fly!

Thanks all, I've ordered a camera which should arrive today. Hopefully can fit it tomorrow and catch whatever it is so i know what I'm dealing with.

I fitted the camera on Saturday. Have heard noise both nights but nothing caught on the camera annoyingly!

I've put a plate of mars bars up there in front of what looks like a tunnel under the insulation so i'm hoping they come out for a snack at some point.

If no luck next weekend will be spent removing the insulation from the corner where i hear them and trying to find something.

Peanut butter is the accepted unresistable thing to most wildlife. If you’re an ecologist, like my daughter, bribing badgers or other wildlife you want to live then use salt and sugar free. For pest control it doesn’t matter

Yeah I had rats in the attic, they were running under the insulation, so that's where to poop was. I had some wire mesh installed where they were climbing the wall and coming up under the eve.

 

This was because a site near me was being developed and the rats were fleeing. Never had to kill one the mesh went up, no more rats! I had to remove a few sections of insulation for the poop as it was too numerous for the old Henry to liberate.

I've just logged in to Ladbrokes and put my £5 on rats, disappointing odds at 7/4 on but didn't think badgers at 500/1 was even worth a punt.

Camera got activated last night multiple times! It didn't touch any of the food so poison doesn't appear like it will work. Will have to order some traps and try catch him.

You have a fine rat there. They take time to get used to new things, they’re very clever, so just be patient when it comes to any trap. It will get careless

I see you went with the Ring option. I unscrewed the base on my and put it on a camera spike to use it to watch the hedgehogs etc in my garden. It’s watching my hedgehog feed station and the hole under the fence

Awww I love hedgehogs. I used to overwinter them for the local rescue before I moved into my flat. Hopefully when I move I will get a garden and be able to see some again.

Mine is the Ring Stick Up which is for outdoor use - retails at £89 but gets reduced to £69 pretty regularly.

 

The video quality is really good. Better than my trail cameras

We originally went with a Wyze cam to keep an eye on the Greyhounds we rescued and it is really good for that (wired so not a wildlife camera), but ended up being a little bit disappointed in the fact that it will only ever record 12 seconds of video (uploaded to app with notifications on movement/sound etc.) and then you have to wait 5 minutes between recordings before it will record another 12 seconds (bit frustrating sometimes when the incident happens after 12 seconds but in the 5 minutes in-between recordings)...

 

Of course you can then pay extra for the Wyze cam plus subscription to unlock the features, but we didn't really think it was worth it.

 

How does the Ring camera work in this respect?

You can only watch videos live if you don’t pay the subscription.

 

If you pay the subscription (£25 pa for one camera. £80 a year for multiple cameras), Ring can do video recordings to the Cloud up to 2 minutes and be immediately triggered for the next 2 minute burst.

 

We have two Ring Cameras out in the garden - one registered by my husband and one by me so we pay £50 not £80. You can share the camera with someone else, so we can both watch both cameras from our phones and iPads.

There are some thing you can try like owl feathers and raw onion were the favourites outside of using WMD!

Caught Roland on camera again last night. Still hasn’t touched any food even the peanut butter so not really sure what what to do now. The pest controller is refusing to come back as I put my own poison up there and he doesn’t go behind people.

Wait. Leave the traps/bait boxes on what looks like its route and eventually it'll have a look inside. Pest controllers have told me they're suspicious of changes to their environment, but eventually curiosity will get the better of them.

Thanks, will just leave it all there and not go in the loft any more. How long will the peanut butter and bait be ok up there till it needs changing?
