What remote monitoring system of servers do you guys use?

The software is free but I purchased a raspberry pi to run it on

Zabbix with grafana. Running on a Ubuntu server vm , although I’m quite interested in getting a raspberry pi to run it or at least test how it runs

 

Been messing around with prtg recently too. Use this for my home environment

I've got an old Intel NUC would this be able to run Zabbix?

I know its not that helpful, but it depends on the spec of the NUC and the number of sensors that you are logging with Zabbix, and whether you use Grafana on another server host to visualize and present data to users.

 

I use a basic virtual machine with 4 cores and 4GB ram and 16 gig disk for logging and then use grafana to present this info to users again a Virtual machine with 2 cores and 2GB

50+ switches including per port interface statistics. (using SNMP templates)

60 AP's (using SNMP templates)

10 servers, (using the windows agent)

schools routers and SAN's etc as well

 

The Zabbix host uses just over 1GB Ram and 0 swap space running on Debian 11

Grafana uses 1.3 GB RAM and 0 swap space

 

CPU usage on both is pretty low onyl bursting if I request large data sets from say the last 12 months

I have been using it for about the last 2 years

Thanks soapyfish, I'll double check the NUC tomorrow it's a good few years old.

 

We would have similar numbers maybe 40ish switches, 15 servers, 70 APs.

 

Can it monitor printers?

I think it can monitor anything that can talk SNMP, so as long as you have a MIB for your printer and know what OIDs to monitor, you’re golden.

Yeah we use it to monitor printers as well but I have more difficulties doing this, as Norphy says you need the SNMP MiBs and OID's. There are plugins for various models of printer on the zabbix pages. However not all of ours are listed and I have a few printers that mis-report things, like the amount of toner in cyan toners although we think it might have sometime to do with using 3rd party toners in that instance but we are not sure about that yet.

Can it monitor printers?

 

To be fair we get Papercut to email our helpdesk when a printer gets to 25%. Means we can check the toner stocks. Didn't find any SNMP features that would help and I think it would just be noisy as staff generally clear paper jams themselves. Thinking though, I guess you could set it to only error if a fault stayed for half hour or so.

Zabbix 6 should be out in a month or so.

 

Start off with setting up SNMP v3 usernames and passwords on everything, upgrading your switches etc
