Block iPad printing

Hello All

We have a pupil who is obsessed with Ian Beale and prints mountains of pictures of the character. No, this is not April first. You read that right; Ian Beale. I have tried the "not allow AirPrint" from the MDM. Alas its running iOS 9 and the no AirPrint only seems to work on iOS 11 and above. As I tested it on my iPad mini running iOS 12 and it removes the option to print. The iOS 9 device still has the option. I thought I had it working, but the handy print AirPrint server had just chocked and needed a restart; which means the iOS 9 device can still print. We have a smoothwall for our firewall and filtering, but I am not sure if a smoothwall S4 box can block search content.

I could put the device on a different WIFI network so the pupil can still have the internet but no printing. Which I think is an option. Anyone got any other ideas?

Probably not what you want to hear but maybe upgrade the device? Its 6 versions behind and hasn't seen any security updates for years.

I think moving your iPads and printers to different VLANS is really your only option.

Agreed. You'd also have to make sure that there is no mDNS/Bonjour forwarding between the isolated VLAN and the VLAN that the printers sit in.

1. Block printing on student iPad completely

2. Allow the student to AirDrop any files to the teacher for printing.

 

P.S. You’ve bought iPads yet you’ve still got students printing rubbish and sending your print costs through the roof, invest in a proper digital assessment and assignment tool and do away with printing everything created.

Do you use mobility print in Papercut? You should be able to restrict mobileprinting to specific users.

The same problem exists for iPhones and iPads that cannot be updated past iOS 9.

Hello

After a week of fiddling with our smoothwall, I have managed to block searchers for "Ian Beale". I know I need to replace old iOS devices, I currently don't have the budget. The power at be, are targeting new devices to the staff and not the learners. It's a policy that will bite them in the rear soon enough.
