Dos_Box Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Welcome back everyone! We hope you all had a good summer break and had time to get at least some time off. As today is the first day back for many schools (Scotland went back the other week AFAIK) I'm just wondering how swamped you all are, or not as the case may be for the fortunate few? Do you have a queue outside your office for password changes, or has all your hard work over the summer become undone within 10 mins of the network getting hammered, let us all know here.
Michael Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 About 8 so far - Christmas is normally worse than the Summer in my experience.

hardtailstar Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 No students but 5 members of staff so far......
Dos_Box Posted September 2, 2021 Author Posted September 2, 2021 Are all your kids back today, or is it the new starters induction day?
free780 Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 SSPR FTW! Now if everyone could register properly so it actually works [emoji3].
Norphy Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 SSPR FTW! Now if everyone could register properly so it actually works [emoji3]. Yeah but that requires actual effort AND it stops them from being able to pretend that they've forgotten their password, spend half an hour wandering around the school with two of their mates before eventually making their way to the IT office to say "Sir my password don't work innit". I always used to wonder why it took three kids to get a single password reset when I worked in front line IT support in a school.
Jaan Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 (edited) it's been the worst summer holiday in a while for us. Printnightmare Bromcom Staff launch Mychild at school with online payments SIMs 3rd party sync migration New cashless system (that works with bromcom) Summer School 3 IT rooms stripped as walls are being knocked down, all needs to go back in 3 IT rooms rewire needed cable/power Office main office admin is being refurbed, rooms repainted floors done new furniture (all it provisions removed) DT dept is also being rebuilt, so touchscreen staff computers as well as the usual starters/levers office moves (including free office interior design service) HOWEVER.... only 2 password requests edit- i did have 2 weeks off! msi_school Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 I always used to wonder why it took three kids to get a single password reset when I worked in front line IT support in a school. Because the kids are thinking "20 minutes out of lesson woo hoo" and the teacher is thinking "20 minutes without those three disturbing the lesson Woo Hoo" 2

Duranis Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 4 staff password resets. Year 6 class apparently do not know their usernames and passwords yet. I mean they have only had the same ones for 5 years so understandable. Had to show the TA how to look them up, expect to walk to the class later and see a nice printed list stuck on a wall somewhere. 5 new members of staff. I had only been told about 2. 1 (senior, important) member of staff apparently doesn't know how to copy photos from a memory card. When I showed them how to do that they then asked how to attach them to an email. Literally just been told that from Monday each year group will be booking out stuff from the library themselves. The teachers/TA's do not have accounts for the library system or know how to use it. I have 50 new laptops I need to build that I didn't get finished before the summer holidays thanks to getting pinged and missing 3 days. Dashcam in minibus has had the USB port smashed in. Probably fixable but had to order a new one as I don't have time to crack the soldering iron out right now. 3 ethernet ports are down in one of the out buildings. Suspect the cables have been chewed through again that connect them to the cab. Not sure quite how this has happened as last time this happened 4 or 5 months ago we put some armored cable runs down. 2 Days in and I haven't even looked at my planned work yet. We do have new SLT though so I'm actually quite happy to be here for the first time in quite a long time.

hardtailstar Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Are all your kids back today, or is it the new starters induction day? Y7, 11 and 6th form in. Still more staff forgetting passwords today.
Rob_D Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Inset today and tomorrow for us so only half a dozen staff and one parent emailing in because student's forgotten their VLE login.

No kids, 3 staff. I expect it to be in double digits by tomorrow! 🤣

Duranis Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 Pesky kids - some of them will eat anything… Honestly, I wouldn't 100% rule that out.... Had one of the office staff come up to me not long ago with a branch off a tree asking if I knew what it was as one of the kids had been eating it.... 1
mdrabble Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 So far…..2 and the kids are not even in until Monday/Tuesday!! I’ve given staff access to password control - let’s see if they will use or use the easy option and send them to us!
ADMaster Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 A few staff resets. Students will start Tuesday. I've delegated password resets via Azure with password writeback. We'll see how that goes this year.
googlemad Posted September 6, 2021 Posted September 6, 2021 Zero, it got me thinking these past couple of weeks how I've now not worked in education for FIVE YEARS Although we have had to start rolling out Office 365, which isn't quite the simple task we had hoped for...in fairness to the users I never had to sign in back in the days of Office 97 to simply type a document either I suppose! I did like the particulary optmistic user who assumed now they had been upgraded to Office 365 all their documents had been magically migrated to OneDrive so they no longer needed to use the VPN...
caffrey Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 Should be how many access cards have you printed off ? Done quite a few passwords yesterday, and a few cards. Staff seem to have remembered theirs this year too The 2nd day (today) has traditionally been the worst day, so bring it on....
craigcamacho Posted September 28, 2021 Posted September 28, 2021 A few staff resets. Students will start Tuesday. I've delegated password resets via Azure with password writeback. We'll see how that goes this year. How are you finding this? I already have this setup but half dismissed the idea of giving all staff access to it because I was worried about the time to sync from AAD to our on-prem AD i.e. member of staff resets password in AAD but the student still cannot log in on a computer for up to 30 mins until it has synced and both Staff and Student assume it hasn't worked and they still end up at the IT office.
synaesthesia Posted September 28, 2021 Posted September 28, 2021 We're still averaging a dozen a day. First week back it was nearer 30-40 a day. Few systems and username changes though, and a lot of staff and students with the inability to follow simple instructions! (many students who literally don't know their own names or other vital information that the average child can write fluently from the age of 4)
