chazzy2501 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I've recently sold my graphics cards on ebay as prices are crazy and I got my money back.. which is nice. Anyhow I'm not enjoying PC gaming anymore (even prior to selling the cards) I feel like I missed out on the PS3 era, I had an Idea to buy an old PS3 and a bunch of quintessential PS3 era games. Any recommendations? (which console and what games or game series) (does it need internet?) cheers.
3s-gtech Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 What sort of games do you want to play? Brown cover shooters like CoD will obviously feel dated, but there are plenty of sure fire classics on PS3 - Uncharted (3>2>1), LoU, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, inFamous, GT5 and 6, as well as masses of non exclusive stuff. Later consoles were more reliable than early ones - Super Slim and Slim models far more so than the original breeze block. No PS2 backwards compatibility with those, though many of the best games were re-released on PS3 (Okami, Shadow of the Colossus).
synaesthesia Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Just do it - you can pick up PS3's for a tenner a pop with games and controllers. Our local auction house has them and PS4's in every other week and they often sell in batches of 3 for 20 quid (the ps4's usually go for about 40).
simpsonj Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 If you pick one up, might be worth looking at the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and Metal Gear Solid 4
admars Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 how about a ps4 (or ps5 if you can find/afford one) and use PlayStation Now ? what would put me off getting a ps3 would be how long it would last, physically. I was lucky, our ps3 died a little while after the missus won a ps4 in a competition, but it was a bit annoying to not be able to go back to/finish some older games. I guess if ps3s are that cheap in cash converters etc, then a "new" one every few months is OK especially if you can make a good one from several broken ones
synaesthesia Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 PS3's are reasonably reliable short of drive issues and those are usually cleaning matters - 2's and 4's were shoddy (dust ingress & overheating on both).
Garacesh Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Is the PS4 backwards compatible? Pre-owned PS4's are going in the range of £150 (not that I've been looking...) which gets you a range of critically acclaimed games like Persona 5, God of War, Spiderman, Bloodborne, Street Fighter 5, inFamous: Second Son, The Last of Us Remastered/The Last of Us 2, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Shadow of the Colossus and Ghosts of Tsushima (Obligatory I haven't played all of these and YMMV, they're just universally praised, maybe with the exception of TLoU2. I have played God of War and Persona 5 though and would highly recommend).
3s-gtech Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 It's not backwards compatible as it's such a different architecture. PS3s will play PS1 games, early 60GB PS3s will play PS2 games as well. Otherwise you have to use the store - which still works on PS3 and they have committed to keeping it running for a while yet.
chazzy2501 Posted July 13, 2021 Author Posted July 13, 2021 I suppose PS3 exclusives and nothing that requires online. uncharted looks good, I can just go through the lot over a month ... Shadow of the Colossus and Ghosts of Tsushima these looked like exactly what I want, really feel like I missed out on those. I only ever played MGS on the first PlayStation, which I loved (that and parasite eve). So metal gear is there like a best one or just all of them? maybe I should get a ps2 to play MGS2 as I missed out on that as well. last of us was looked amazing, so that's a buy. Persona 5, God of War, Spiderman, Bloodborne yes yes yes and I think I have that on PC (darksouls type thing?) I'll probably look at CEX website for a console. or maybe a job lot on ebay.
Bedders Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Ni No Kuni was a great gem - full orchestral soundtrack, and done with Studio Ghibli so it looks fantastic. Story is a bit childish but I still really enjoyed it! Tales of Xillia I've started and enjoyed but not sat down to get very far into yet. Shadow of the Colossus is amazing. There's a PS3 remastered version with ICO as well. Turok is fun if you're a fan of action games. The Last of Us - I enjoyed it but got too freaked out by the Clickers. I could probably power through if I played it in daylight without headphones, and wasn't jump-scared by my family... Timeshift is a novel shooter if you haven't already played it. Lets you reverse time as a core gameplay mechanic. I've picked up the 3 Uncharted games for £9. The first one seems to be tougher going than the others (a bit repetitive and controls feel less smooth than I'm used to as a PC gamer) so I may resort to watching a Let's Play and jumping to 2.

I want to re-play them all (probably via the collection on PS4) but I'll be skipping 1. It has some fantastic scenes, but I didn't find it fun to play after a certain point...
LeMarchand Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I'm still using my PS3. Currently on Mass Effect 3. I'd say go for it (and try Mass Effect).
DrCheese Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I hooked my old PS3 up to my 55ins 4k in the living room a few months ago - ugh. The games haven't aged well (they look awful) & playing at 30fps feels incredibly dated nowadays.
chazzy2501 Posted July 13, 2021 Author Posted July 13, 2021 looking at bundles on ebay and they consist of b tier games:( also I can't find a ps3 version of Ghosts of Tsushima? some games are only £1 on CEX but the postage is £1.95 each no consolidation

I was happily playing Silent Hill on my PS1 last time I had an extended stay with my aged P. Edited July 13, 2021 by LeMarchand 1

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection contains MGS2, MGS3 and Peace Walker. All are worth a play, but MGS3 is generally considered the best in series. It also has versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 if you like it very old skool! MGS4 is a little cut scene heavy, but absolutely worth a play, especially if you enjoyed MGS.
Theblacksheep Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I can't find a ps3 version of Ghosts of Tsushima? PS4 and PS5 only
LeMarchand Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Looked at my list, and a few not mentioned above (not all PS3 exclusives but I've also "gone off" PC gaming a bit). The American McGee Alice games Bioshock series Brothers
Garacesh Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Bioshock series First-person shooter games basically require a mouse But if you can get behind using an analogue stick, they're definitely fantastic games everybody should play if they haven't.
LeMarchand Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 First-person shooter games basically require a mouse Nah - just set the difficulty to low . I'm more about the story/experience than the feeling of being the best of the best. 1
round2it Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 (edited) i am collecting ps3 games as they are dirt cheap and will only increase in value like the ps2 games that are going for stupid money, also dusting off the yugioh cards the kids had as they are making good money. ps3 is a good console but as other members said they are a brick and you need to take care of them if you get a second hand one i would open it up and clean it out and put some new thermal paste on the chips otherwise you will be greeted with a ylod and or a noisy fan working way too hard. im looking for the killzone hd for the ps3 as it was such a good game on the ps2 i need to play it again. chazzy2501 Posted July 13, 2021 Author Posted July 13, 2021 I just bought a slim console and some of the suggested games. (some games like Persona 5 and Spiderman were expensive) I don't mind starting in the middle of a series and will wait for better pricing on the other games.
