No worries at all for us then, we have a good…20% or so of our machines that meet that spec.

 

So we either run 10 past its EoL or have to get brutal with the skip filing.

 

To be fair, some of our PCs will be 16 years old by that point…

I have to say, forcing UEFI, Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 and all that from as early as 2025 (which is when W10 goes EOL) doesn't make sense IMO for the education market. Yes, these security features are important for GDPR, but it's not like education PC's are exactly modern half the time. I hope they provide some form of extended support for Edu edition, but they won't so I hope you all like begging SLT for money. Times like these make me happy I'm an IT assistant rather than a network manager, and one who needs to find a new job anyhow!

I'd agree with that. To me the main point of Windows 11 existing seems to be primarily a marketing drive to try and push the Windows Store again. Plus a renewed focus on making Windows viable as a tablet/touchscreen OS by supporting Android apps and greater touch functionality. Almost, dare I say it, another attempt to capture the market they were aiming for with Windows 8

 

The Android Apps thing sounds intriguing though and even more strange that they're available via the Amazon AppStore which exists within the Microsoft Store? Microsoft certainly seem to be taking a far more open approach to allowing third party stores on Windows devices compared to Google/Apple. Though perhaps it's somewhat of an admission that the Windows Store has largely failed to carve out an audience up until this pont with both consumers and developers eschewing it in favour of third party alternatives. Feels like they're on a bit of a charm offensive to appeal to developers and content publishers who are fed up with the App Store revenue percentage Apple and Google currently demand.

Quite a few security features of Win10 require UEFI and TPM, so MS wanting to lock them in on a shiny new OS going up against so much competition is not all that surprising. If security isn't a USP for your OS in 2021, you're doing it wrong.

Absolute worst case and you have machines still kicking about that you can't upgrade with TPMs/replace you can roll back to the latest LTSC for Windows 10 at the time - The 1809 release is supported until 2028 & I believe they're releasing one this year (To marry up with windows server 2022)

 

You may have to roll those clients back to the LTSC branch of office as well, but you can eek a few more years out of them with that. Not ideal of course.

I hope they force credential guard on if a TPM is required.

 

Also turn on all the defender featurea like controlled folder access.

 

They should ship the OS in the most secure config they can. If config does need changing it can but the tyranny of the default causes so many issues.

Some of it is cool but why did they have to make it look like MacOS? Even to the dots under running applications. Grrr.

Doubly odd as AFAIK you can use Your Phone to run your Samsung (only) phone on screen in W10.

Yeah, that's the disappointing thing which will limit what Android apps you can get on Windows. I assume that Google didn't want to allow Microsoft access to the Google Play Store, and associated services, as they'd probably view touch enabled Windows devices running Android apps as competition to their own Chromebooks.
