psydii Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 I don't believe that they're really all that bothered about competing with, or being able to run on the Macbook and the M1 processor. I think they're looking at being to run Windows properly on ARM devices to combat Chromebooks and for server use moving forward. Its your Mediatek, Rockchip, Qualcomm and Exynos chips that they're thinking of here ultimately. M1 is exciting, and it's great to see ARM architectures are battling at the top end, but I don't think that is Microsoft's play. From a commercial point of view you are absolutely right and if this isn't the primary focus of their development over the next few years, I despair. There is however I think a great deal of value on providing a great experience on the mac hardware. Running well on M1 Macs will bring significant cachet from certain power users/tech influencers (I apologies for using that term). Pretty sure getting this to work at all required dev work from the Windows team so they've got from

I can't understand how it's 6 years since Windows 10 was released and they still haven't managed to merge/combine Windows Settings and Control Panel! It's even worse when you consider that Windows Settings first appeared alongside Windows 8 in 2012 going on towards a decade ago! Edited June 9, 2021 by flyinghaggis
supportman Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 Oh settings is probably my biggest issue with Windows 10 currently. New app looks awesome!!
Norphy Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 Given MS poor past experiences of 'trying something new and exciting' I would be inclined to agree - It's highly unlikley this version of Windows will have anything significant changed under the hood, all modern versions of Windows are simply MS-DOS with sparkly bits. I still get funny looks when I go to 'old' windows boxes instead of the shiny UI - It will be a long time before we are rid of DOS! C:\DOS C:\DOS RUN RUN DOS RUN Uh, no. Modern versions of Windows run on the NT kernel, which was a brand new kernel developed by MS in the early 90s. The fact that NT based operating systems have a command prompt with commands which have a similar syntax to old DOS commands does not make Windows NT 3/3.5/4 and Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/7/8/10 based on DOS. The last MS-DOS based version of Windows was Windows ME.
supportman Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 A good roundup of the new features here: https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-sun-valley-features-everything-we-know 2
Dos_Box Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 Oh settings is probably my biggest issue with Windows 10 currently. New app looks awesome!! A lot better than I was expecting. I almost expected to see a box with the words 'Trust Us' displayed when you went to look for settings. As has been mentioned though, it is strange that they still have not managed to combine the old and new control panels by now. Perhaps it really was too much of a cludgy mess underneath and W11 has a total rewrite for all the settings.

Steve21 Posted June 11, 2021 Posted June 11, 2021 Well it's official, Windows 10 is retiring! Windows 10 Enterprise and Education - Retirement Date - 10/14/2025 (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-enterprise-and-education) Windows 10 Home and Pro - Retirement Date - 10/14/2025 (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-home-and-pro) Both lifecycle pages updated, and MS said they'll be running 10 alongside "11/new" so sounds like it's coming sooooon Steve 2

Rob_D Posted June 13, 2021 Posted June 13, 2021 Hopefully before the summer holidays so can install it on machines after testing! I'd expect at least a year's overlap. In fact I'd plump for a 2022/23 release. Consider that Windows 10 came out in 2015 and Windows 8 mainstream support ended 2018 (and Win7 ended in 2020), and Win7 came out 2009 while XP didn't retire until 2014)
Steve21 Posted June 13, 2021 Posted June 13, 2021 Guessing we'll hear more details on the event on the 24th, but I think it depends how "spin-offy" it is from Win10/X, as the CEO said they've been using it for the last few months, so either it's been hidden well or it must be a combination for them to already be using it Steve
paulkerton Posted June 14, 2021 Posted June 14, 2021 It's looking likely, from a user's viewpoint, that it'll be a Windows 10 update branded as Windows 11, rather than a whole refresh ala the jump from XP > Vista > 7. They're suggesting new features for it that I already have due to Windows 10 Insider, for example.
JordanT91 Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Apologies if I've missed a thread. Windows 10, including Education and Enterprise editions, will be end of life in October 2025. Apparently 'Windows 11' will be announced this month. I personally welcome it, I've never been a fan of Windows 10. Hopefully with this next version of Windows they do a better job of removing unnecessary rubbish from the Education version right from the start. 1
mavhc Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Why would a change in version number make any difference?
paulkerton Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 I don't think Windows 11 is going to be that much of a revolutionary change. It's a branding exercise, primarily. 1

paulkerton Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Why would a change in version number make any difference? Because they've given "Windows 10 Enterprise and Education" an end of support date, rather than end of support for 21H1 or 20H2. Ie they won't be doing any updating to Windows 10 at all past 14th October 2025.

Ie they won't be doing any updating to Windows 10 at all past 14th October 2025. Unless you're running Windows 10 LTSB 1607 or Windows 10 LTSC 1809, they're still supported until the year 2026 and 2029. It's fair to say I will be observing what happens with Windows 11, but I won't deploy it anytime soon! #learnlessonsfromdeployingwindows101507 1

Windows 11 won't be a massive change though, because it's only been 2 months since the last OS release.
jthompson Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Will it coincide with Windows Server 2022, I wonder?

Ie they won't be doing any updating to Windows 10 at all past 14th October 2025. Depends on what is different. If it is just a graphical overhaul with things in the same place (which it is from the sounds of it) then it won't be much different from what most of us have been doing for ages. New version, wait a month to check no nasties and then rebuild using new version and because everything else is scripted or task based no major faff. If MS decide to go whacky with the start menu, ala Win8, then I will probably wait a while longer and do it over a summer so we can prep staff. We've already survived EOL for various versions of Win10, this sounds like just another one of those but with a different brand.

Oh they're bound to go whacky. I've seen the suggestion that they're centering the start menu buttons ala ChromeOS and Mac (which I already do using TaskbarX myself) so there will be whacky. As the addage ever was - wait for the first Service Pack!

It might stay on the left when using non-touch input.
localzuk Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Windows 10 has always suffered with a typical MS problem - not providing new UI ways of doing things that have to be done using the old UIs. So, all the fancy Settings app stuff, with the new UI for managing lots of stuff in Windows can STILL only do a very small subset of what Control Panel can do. Lots of windows are still Win32 era - eg. Folder Options, or most properties windows. None of them are particularly touch friendly. If Windows 11 finally rolls out new UIs where they're still using 20 year old UIs at the moment, that'd be a good step forward.
