darrents Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 Morning all, We are look at refreshing our Server SAN. At present we have a three host switches SAN setup on VMware. We are looking at a Hyper Converge solution. The options are:- Cisco HyperFlex Dell VX Rail StarWind with their hardware. Has anyone installed or used any of these solutions. Any feedback welcome. aleach2 Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 Not used any of the vendors you mentioned but I have had hands-on in a sandbox environment with Nutanix and HPE dHCI. Both of these were very impressive.

It works and does what it says on the tin, IOPS are low etc etc. My issue is we're constantly harassing support about one thing or another and the update process (firmware, esx and hx) was overly complicated. The money saved from buying/creating/maintaining a SAN can be re-invested in faster connectivity into school.

I agree, whilst their may still be some call/need in FE and HE it is hard to argue in smaller orgs with little call/need such server infrastructures to go down the route of a SAN specially a Fibre Channel SAN Edited March 29, 2021 by Davit2005 1

Any reason you went for 7.2K Midlines over proper full-speed SAS? Prices for 1TB are fairly low as things stand. I think we can do 1.8TB 12G 10k SAS SSHDs for only £85 each so standard HDDs can't be too much. 1
