ICT_GUY Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Anyone using this or PCanywhere or just plain remote desktop? How do you access your servers from home? GOTOMYPC seems to work through the firewalls but costs £100 per year and I am sure there are other ways of doing this. Its Citrix based BTW.

strawberry Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 i use logmein, but i use it to my desktop pc as i'm a little wary of sticking anything java on the servers unless i really need to. I then have an mmc to manage all my remote desktops. 1

I then have an mmc to manage all my remote desktops. Yer that’s an idea, I use VNC over logmein and surprisingly its pretty fast and doesn’t loose a lot of picture quality. 1
mac_shinobi Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 what about setting up a VPN to one server and using remote desktop ? Possibly SSH or some sort of security on the VPN like IPSEC or something ? Not that clued up about it but have been doing a little bit of reading but havent got the hardware to test things on - yet. 1
OutToLunch Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I have an SSH server running on our PDC on a non standard high numbered port, with a secure password for the remote user - find it a bit less flakey than VPN on bad broadband. From the SSH connection I can tunnel to any PC on the lan and use remote desktop... 1

ICT_GUY Posted June 11, 2008 Author Posted June 11, 2008 Well I used gotomypc last night and it worked flawlessly. I have it installed onto my workstation which then allowed me to remote desktop and VNC around the network. It was very weird doing it for the first time, noting that 2 of the suite PCs were left on and logging them off. Also worked for accessing my web cam. Only thing is I started to play some MP3s, forgetting that A) the speakers were on in my work room and B) SMT were having a meeting across the corridor. I'm about to download some screams and other ghostly sounds. In conjunction with the webcam I should be able to give someone a heart attack.
ICT_GUY Posted June 11, 2008 Author Posted June 11, 2008 Also does anyone use the logmein pro version, its a hell of a lot cheaper than gotomypc at $70 per year (£36) and seems to have more of the functionality of gotomypc. (file transfer and such like).

But i didn't see the need in the end as I could alway email the things I needed to transfer (as they wernt that big) or just upload them to a webserver. The times I need to move somehting big i'd do it via USB stick when I'm next in work 1
sven Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I use REALVNC for my Dedicated box down in London. Never had a problem with it, and it's a pretty lightweight application to install as well. To be fair, it's not work related. I just host game servers and run it as an FTP server

The Free logmein gives you desktop only... where as Gotomy PC gives you drag and drop file transfer... Gotomy PC is a superior product to Logmein.... you can also have a desktop shortcut with gotomy pc that will instantly open the remote desktop with no passwords or logging on malarky

Gotomypc is faster, better looking and more feature packed, however logmein is free and it still works. Works well enough. School would pay the £100 per year but I woulds rather spend it on a bigger monitor.
