How do you host your personal websites ?

Just wondering how people host there own websites ? Do you have it running on your own server or do you use a provider ? I’m currently deciding between hosting my own Wordpress or signing up to fasthosts Wordpress

Personally i like being in control with everything that i do. So i pay for a really easy and small VPS with Hetzner, running Linux. And then I use Apache to run my web services and make my websites manually. Or i use HTML/PHP templates and then edit them.

 

If you aren't really experienced in HTML/PHP coding or Linux, then yeah Wordpress is a really good start. Either way, its all down to personal preference and what you like doing

I also do the same, I have my own CentOS VPS running openlitespeed which does the trick and also allows me to host the occasional minecraft server as well.

 

As Jay said, it's all personal preference but if you're just looking for some cheap shared hosting for WordPress, the only recommendation I'd make is to avoid any of the hosting companies under one of the larger brands like EIG and GoDaddy.

If this is your own personal-for-fun website, it depends whether you like / want to have a go at setting up your own server or if you just what to concentrate on designing a snazzy Wordpress-based site. Personanally, I prefer to use a statc site generator (Hugo, Jekyll, Gatsby, etc) so I pay for a basic Debian host with OVH, around £3.80 a month.

I have a host account from Dreamhost which I've had for years, I personally don't have a site but do host a friends simple 2 or 3 page site. Year ago I ran my own home server on a ADSL connection as it was back then but I have no need these days for much and Dreamhost does the job for me.

I have a couple of cheap OVH VPSs. £3 a month each. More than adequate for a personal site.

I have been running a Wordpress site that has been growing steadily since 2017.

 

Started on shared hosting, then moved to VPS but outgrew standard plans pretty quick (storage heavy photography site).

 

Since June last year now on an OVH dedicated server running really smooth and simple to migrate/run. Hopefully should do the job for at least the next 3-4 years.

 

I had looked into self hosting at home but going dedicated with OVH was a no brained for my project. All comes down to the size of site your building and budget you want to set yourself. Growing through packages is no big deal these days with how portable Wordpress can be via backups.

Have a look at Elementor, very good site builder for WordPress.

 

As for hosting, I use Siteground WordPress offering for multiple sites.

Joomla on a Low Cost Names host. I like it as it supports one-click install of Joomla, and LE cert integration. Probably not the cheapest setup, but good enough.

 

Joomla is overkill for this site, but as I’ve been using it for 15 years I’m happy with the flexibility it gives.

I was on Fasthost's wordpress which I think was cheap to begin with then ended up about £5.99 a month once the offer ran out. It was really slow though, so I moved to an Azure VM (B1ms which is 1vCPU, 2GB RAM I think?) running Debian and I've put Wordpress and the database on there. With a VM reservation it costs about £7 a month and it's so much faster than the shared hosting one was.

I use a wordpress site on krystal for £60 a year. As soon as they become more expensive than Azure I'll jump ship.

I just have a Google Site and point it to a domain via Google Domains. Keep it simple for what I need a site for.

 

Though I will be expiring it soon as I don't really do anything with it any more, and it's name isn't relevant to the topic these days.

I used to do a lot with Mediawiki back in the day, so I might go back to a solution using that as it's core, as I usually use my site as publically available instructions and notes for things I'm working on.

I have sites hosted in two places. I have a Digital Ocean droplet running Ubuntu server that I keep some stable old sites on and I have some WordPress sites hosted by Zen. For testing and general mucking about I have several instances of Ubuntu Server running under Virtualbox on an old Mac.

 

The DO droplet being just a VM gives you full control, of course, but you also have full responsibility to maintain the server. The Zen one is a traditional control panel setup so you have a fair amount of control, including changing PHP versions, adding PEAR modules etc. but you have no command shell. You do, though, have an underlying server that is maintained for you. And, with Softaculous, it's not much more than a click to fire up new Wordpress instances.

 

All have fixed IPs, but for the test ones they're internal IP addresses.

I don't host anymore, I have one WP site (that needs new content!) that I have on a free WP domain. What about a Raspberry Pi at home? I've got a fixed IP from my ISP for a one off cost (£10 I think)
