Software to show serial number easily?

Morning all,

Is there software out there which would show a serial number to an end user easily? I got fed up of naming laptops so just set the laptop name to serial however if someone wants support and our records were to be out of date, tracking them down would be a pain.

 

Can't ask them to run powershell or anything. Needs to just be double click and shows...

 

Any thoughts?

you'd use wmic in powershell.

 

wmic bios list brief /format:list

Or if the computer name is the serial number, write-output $env:computername

If you're setting the computer name to the Serial number why not just pull the name of the machine:

 

echo %computername%

BGinfo or similar to put the computer name on the screen if the computer name is the serial/asset number.

We name our machines to our asset number. It's then visible on the machine for staff to report to us. Although it does mean we have to name them during the MDT process but after that they never get renamed.

 

Never, ever name a machine by it's location, use or staff member. As soon as you do, it's location, use or the staff member will change.

Bginfo can be used as a pop up window. we use it here for diags.

We had an Asset system which when we deployed PC's we'd simply scan the QR code and tell it where the computer, Projector, Printer etc was going to be deployed to.

 

As been a college we moved PCs from IT suites every year for enrolment and back again it made it easier just to use the asset tag as the computer name as we'd normally have to move all the PCs back to location in a few hours ready for the next day.

Deploy to machines via unc path or xcopy.
