TFT vs CRT ???????

hello before we receive 10 new workstations that i assumed came with tft's i have now been asked to justify why we should have them instead of crt's. reasons that spring to my mind are the obvious like consumes less space, energy efficient, looks professional and last longer. are there any more valid reasons you can think of??

get 1 crt and 1 tft monitor, place them next to each other, and ask the person whoever it is to ship them both to whatever room your new machines are going to be placed (the further away the better)

More energy efficent is the one main reason i think any school should look at TFT's, schools have huge carbon footprints as it is, just tell them itll save on their leccy bills and that should do.

 

More stylish is always a good point, your room always looks more professional with TFT's thant CRT's

 

Are CRT's even available to buy anymore? whenever i buy a machine in its always got a TFT monitor on it.

 

Theres no saving in CRT's anymore, back in the day when crt's were 70 quid or whaever and TFT's were several hundred, there was a fiscal point to buying CRTs, but now that you can get nice tft's for under a hundred quid, i dont see the piont since youre gaining so many advantages imo.

they enable you to comfortably work with brighter lights - Every time i order a PC i find it hard work to get it without a TFT.

i mean as a general lifetime span not if its been thrown across the room lol. but that would be another good reason as crt's are much heavier

I've found CRTs last far longer than TFTs despite being stabbed with compasses, drawn on with marker and dropped.

 

Mind you, TFTs with glass fronted such as the ones from Nuevo are top notch.

CRTs produce more radiation and are susceptible to magnetic fields. The increased flicker generated by them also means that they strain the users eyes much quicker than an LCD.

1. Takes up less room

 

2. Out of date - people assumethat CRTs are attached to old kit - need to present a good impression of school

 

3. Cost (they really aren't that expensive now) - CRTs may be cheaper, but that's because nobody wants them now (see 1)

 

4. Energy efficiency - see this page from Viglen Saving Energy

An older 17" CRT monitor will consume around 120W of power, costing about £27 a year to run, compared to a 38W 17" TFT which will cost around £8.50. Larger CRT monitors are even worse - get your CRTs recycled and deploy TFTs.

More space on the desk is a bit of a myth. Everyone just pulls the screen closer into the middle of the desk.

 

Power consumption is a deciding factor though, and yes it does give a modern appeaence and is easier on the eyes.

 

You have to pay a lot lot more to get as good a quality image from a TFT than a reasonable CRT though. If you were buying for an art room I'd still consider a CRT.

That's still maybe a £120 difference - bet if you tried you could find someone who would pay you to take away their CRT screens.

Yup but only in more CAD / CAM sizes rather than the small 15 and 17" ones.

We got rid of our CRT’s ages ago, now we are replacing older TFT’s.

TFT produce a lot less heat, which is useful. TFT's do show which teachers look after there rooms and manage the pupils properly. Two rooms we have had to replace the normal TFT's with hard glass TFT's whereas all other suites are fine.

Have to disagree with this. At two schools, we have been trying to create mini-suites around the school in any spare space available - the schools are cramped so I mean anywhere! Having TFTs means we were able to put in much shallower desking than was required for the CRTs meaning more areas available.

 

The drop in heat output was also a big bonus for us. Not just for the cheaper running costs but now teachers aren't inclined to put the air conditioning on as much in the suite

I agree, the only question is 17" or 19", we've moved to 19". Although the admin office this year will be going for 20" widescreens.

Gradually moving to 19" here... Still got a few 15" hanging round, and they're a darn sight easier to store when you want to keep them for those little emergencies!
