Jawloms Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 We've just bought a lot of Lenovo V15 IIL laptops. Randomly they won't get an IP address, they show a 169.254.x.x address. If you type "ipconfig /all" they have the correct DNS servers. If you type "ipconfig /renew" it says "The operation was cancelled by the user" against the Wi-Fi connection. I have IP addresses available. All my other devices (HP, Dell, iPads, Samsung phones, MacBooks) all connect fine. The Lenovos don't have a built in NIC, but if I plug in a USB -> NIC adapter that will get an IP address straight away. We're using latest drivers. It's a Realtek card. Removing the NIC in device manager and rebooting, then reconnecting it to the wireless fixes the problem for a bit, then randomly it will stop again. It never stops working while the device is in use, just when it's fired up again sometime later, but sometimes even then it works. Ruckus unleashed with R610 access points. The primary school down the road has 10 of these units and they show the same symptoms, and they were built by a different person, from a different source on a different network. Any thoughts?? Thank you Stuart
synaesthesia Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 Drivers would be first port of call. Second, try using WEP authentication as a test assuming you're on WPA2 at the moment. We've just got a load of L14's and they seem to absolutely hate WPA2 but fine on Radius. 1
Jawloms Posted September 15, 2020 Author Posted September 15, 2020 Have you tried flush DNS? Yes, and various netsh commands too.
Jawloms Posted September 17, 2020 Author Posted September 17, 2020 I've just tried manually putting in an IP address within my IP range and it then works. Switch it back to DHCP, won't pick up an IP. Removing the card in device manager, scanning for new hardware and reconnecting to the wireless then immediately finds an IP through DHCP. Doesn't need a reboot. So weird..........

Doesn't need a reboot. So weird.......... That seems to be the solution we have seen with a few usff Lenovo Thinkstation desktops we have, although we often have to do a reboot between removing the device and re-scanning.
sigma Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 I have some of these too. I have installed all the drivers successfully, no missing devices, but still have the wifi issue. I have raised a ticket with Lenovo, but no resolution or anything as yet.
sigma Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 Worth noting that its not just a Lenovo thing, there are posts on HP's forums about this wifi card too.
Squelch Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 I had 50 of these laptops delivered over the summer holiday. I imaged them and then they were shutdown for around 3 weeks. At the start of term none of them would pick up an IP from DHCP as previously described in this thread. I uninstalled each in device manager and then added them and then they worked correctly. The problem has not resurfaced for three weeks, I doubt it has gone away on its own. Yesterday I installed the driver that I linked in the other V15-IIL thread into one classroom only to see if it makes any difference. How often does the problem happen to others? 1
sigma Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 Ramdomly for my users. They are teachers so take the devices home. Will try reinstalling the drivers though. Thanks.
Squelch Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 The good thing about this is that multiple manufacturers are having similar issues with the same wi-fi adapter so you'd expect a fix to be incoming fairly quickly. Asus are having the same trouble too.
Squelch Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 This morning, several of them were not connecting properly. I installed the newer driver and they still would not connect, even after uninstalling the cards in device manager. I took them up to my office on the next floor where they all connected to a different access point without me doing anything at all. Took them back down to their classroom and they are all happily connected. Next time I'm going to try restarting the access point to see if it's a quicker way of reconnecting them all.
Jawloms Posted September 25, 2020 Author Posted September 25, 2020 Next time I'm going to try restarting the access point to see if it's a quicker way of reconnecting them all. I tried this when I first had the problem and it made no difference for me. 1
round2it Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 i seem to be having similar issues with my lenovo t450s in particular when the goto sleep and wake up the wifi connects but the lights are on but no one is home. tried power options but to no avail.
sigma Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 I’m finding that the quickest bypass is first an ipconfig /release ipconfig/renew which both appear to fail but must be doing something as a device disable then enable puts it straight back on the connection properly.

sigma Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 I have found... The driver in the Lenovo package is documented on the website as 113, what is installed is 121. Microsoft have driver from Realtek which is 124, but it’s not offered in WU and won’t install manually. There’s nothing on Realtek’s website for this device at all. There are lots of reports on the interwebs reporting problems, but nothing seemingly to provide a permanent fix.
Squelch Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 and the driver I linked to is 126 which still doesn't fix it.
Squelch Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 The link below is to an HP laptop with the same wi-fi card. It installs version 214, I've installed it on one laptop to test. https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-15-dy1000-laptop-pc-series/29322765/model/31388371 1

mike_ash Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Anyone got a driver that works reliably for these, we bought 70 over the summer and the reliability of them isn't going down well. Current driver has the following details: model: Realtek 8822CE Wireless LAN 802.11ac PCI-E NIC Driver Version: 2024.0.8.122 Driver Date: 27/04/2020 Anyone found a better driver?
Squelch Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Yep, look two posts up and you'll find version 214 on the HP website. I've installed it on most of my laptops now and it seems to be ok so far. 2
3s-gtech Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Holy joy, these cards are fitted to our lovely new laptops. And they're awful in those too (E495). Trying the newer driver now.
Squelch Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 (edited) Version 214 is on all of my laptops now, I've changed the roaming sensitivity level from low to middle and on the power management tab I've stopped the computer from turning the wi-fi off to save power. I haven't been called to any of them yet (which doesn't mean much) but *so far* they have behaved themselves. Of course as soon as I post this reply something will go wrong. *edit* Just found version 217 (x86) on driver hub. I'm going to wait and see how 214 is before trying it though. https://www.drvhub.net/devices/network/realtek/rtl8822ce-802-11ac-pcie-adapter Edited September 30, 2020 by Squelch 1
sigma Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 I've installed 214 on one laptop now. Observations. I was told that the laptop I installed it on was working well at school and home. As soon as I took it to my normal work area and powered it up, it failed to find the network again, but this is on a different access point on the same network. When I originally imaged these laptops, I was connected to an access point that is fairly seldom used, When restarted in their teaching rooms, none could find the network and I had to reset them all again. I'm wondering if the problem is associated with reconnecting to the same network on a different access point which would explain why they sometimes work? I've not needed to change "roaming sensitivity" before, and will look into that.
