Remote hardware monitoring

What solutions do you use to remotely monitor the health of network client PC's? -

Zabbix, vm appliance, msi/chocolately agent installer for Windows, cross platform, open source

I use Zabbix to gather the data and Grafana to graph and display it nicely. There is a Zabbix plugin for grafana and the grafan docs are clear and simple. you can also use SNMP or the Zabbix agent active or passive checks if you install the agent on the target servers for extra info

What types of monitoring do you want to do?

 

If you've got a static IP or a firewall that allows you to whitelist based on domain name you can sign up for a free dynamic DNS name and RDP in to a server to get you on the network that way.

+ 1 for Zabbix. Get alert emails straight to helpdesk for things as routine as critical services on hosts not running, downtime alerts, etc.

I'd be interested to hear what people are monitoring on client PC's. We monitor our servers and network gear quite intensively, but not the regular client machines. Our monitoring system assumes that down=bad, so not really suitable to pointing at client machines. We do have an inventory agent deployed to clients which keeps our inventory up to date with things like hardware devices, status of volumes and installed software.

You can deploy zabbix to client machines and auto put them into a group that doesn't assume down=bad

I monitor RAM HDD usage and CPU load on heavily used machines like the admin offices and media suites. I use this info to help justify hardware upgrades and help inform the desktop replacemnt planning.
