A lot of the reviews seem to be a little disappointing. The common theme seems to be that it's only worth buying if you're on a 1070 or 9xx series card. The performance increase from a 1080 or 20xx series card isn't that much. Plus with AMD's announcement and upcoming release of the 6000 series, which the rumour mill is in full force in terms of performance scores, it's worth waiting to see how they stack up, especially in price. The 3080 is a fantastic card, in terms of frames per £ at 4k and in generational uplift, but the manufacturing processes have meant that this has been done with high power requirements (which the coolers deal with). Saying that it’s not a great upgrade from a 2080 Ti is forgetting the fact that it is half the cost, and when RT is used it is markedly better.

 

Nvidia should have looked to a more efficient process, but as it is they have fuelled massive demand, sold out cards, and put real drive in the PC gaming scene (like AMD’s processors). I really look forward to AMD’s response, and would love to see a price battle to drive the midrange back down. Most I’ve ever spent on a card was £160, as the costs went beyond my tastes after that.

Seems like Overclockers UK are being review bombed on Trust Pilot, Facebook and Google over their handling of the RTX 30xx launch.

 

To be fair, if half the stuff being talked about in the OC forums is accurate they have kind of brought it on themselves. I've been haunting OC's 3080 thread since launch as it was the best way to get stock updates, and I would agree their customer communications have been rather sparse and lacklustre compared to their competitors.

Also keeping their preorders open may not be helping, as people who get dropped into the back of a queue that's 1000s long and is hardly moving, (rightly or not) might be miffed.

 

On a more upbeat note, Watchdogs Legion looks awesome on my shiny new 3090 :D.

Yeah, my 3080 is on pre-order with OCUK, so I have no idea when I'm going to get it. Queue update on Friday, I was in position 964 or around there for the Asus TUF OC.

Got my first PC being built over the next few days, managed to secure myself a 3070 which is a major upgrade from the previous cards so i'm happy with that. this is however my first gaming PC, so don't be surprised if i drop a thread asking for help on the more technical side of things :)

Mighty tempted to upgrade my 2080ti, but then i need a new CPU first as still have the 1800x which shows its age in the new COD, then will need new RAM to go with it... along with needing a new MacBook.... and Monitor......

It might look awesome but the gameplay is bland and shallow... now, AC Valhalla :eyebrows:

Apparently there's a character in AC:V with a scouse accent and sounds remarkably like Korean Billy. I haven't played it, so can't confirm.

I'm finding the Watch Dogs gameplay pretty engaging TBH. Although I will agree Valhalla is good fun.

Well if you've not been able to get anything so far, and it all looks a little rich for your blood anyway, the 3060Ti has just unexpectedly arrived. tl;dr: £370 for 2080 Super/1080Ti performance.

 

Up till now I've not particularly regretted my GPU purchase 6 months ago--everything new has been lovely, sure, but always (a) way more expensive (b) impossible to get hold of--but it looks like this card might actually be the one that puts the 5700XT to shame for about the same price point. The frame rates are not hugely different--maybe 10-15%--but it's got all the fancy ray-tracing and DLSS gubbins in that the 5700XT hasn't.

I was watching the reviews of this yesterday and it's quite a capable card, but as was pointed out, it's not that much of a jump to the 3070 price wise, but I can see these populating the lower end of the custom gaming PC market.

Will be interesting to see what (if anything) AMD can do as traditionally they tend not to release a whole variety of chipsets, unlike Nvidia.

I dunno, only prices for the 3070 I can see anywhere are ~£550, so that's a 50% jump from £370! Even the FE RRP is a good £100 more, isn't it?

It's clever pricing, just in that bracket of making you think "it's not that much more for the next one up".

Not necessarily. Monitors haven't caught up to TVs in terms of quality and feature set. 4K monitors are very expensive and lack things like good HDR. The sweet spot of monitors at the moment is 1440p high refresh rate, with a lot of people still using 1080p. If you're hooking the PC up to a 4K display, then yeah, a 3080 is the card for you...but the majority of PC gamers are still on 1080p/1440p displays.

Yup. 27in 1440p is the sweet spot for me and my desk at the moment. I figure I won't go 4k until about 5 years down the line, which would be new GPU time anyway. Mind you, by that point my eyesight will probably be so knackered that 4k would be a waste ;)

 

So the 4k card would cost another couple of hundred over the 1440p card, then I'd need to spend another £400 on a decent 4K screen, and I'd love all that but, alas, I have a mortgage and children, I have to make the sensible choices. (He says, eyeing up one of these cards and eBaying the one he got 5 months ago...)

Hmm interesting, I've had 4k at home and work for a few years now. I don't think I could go back to those fuzzy icons :D

 

Looks like I'm going to have to buy an expensive card then!!

Given the lack of availability, price hikes, scalping etc. I'm going to wait for my next GPU purchase.

I do think that Nvidia does have a bit of a panic on as regards to AMD though. I know their ray tracing isn't exactl;y spectacular at the moment, but their next gen GPU's may give Nvidia a bit of a shock,

There was a review channel (may have been Hardware Unboxed) who said that once the AMD and Nvidia recoup their R&D costs we should see some pretty good price drops, and this could be by spring next year.

i mean as someone who has a 4k monitor (it was bought before i had a game pc as effectively a 2nd tv that i plugged stuff into) im not sure 4k is needed when your sat 50cm away from the screen (and a 32@ screen at that distance is massive) yes its nice to run games at 4k but im not sure id notice much difference dropping to 1440 and id have a better refresh rate (current screen does have freesync but maxes out at 60hz and its not on nvidias supported list). again if id known i was going ot build a game rig i wouldnt of got this particular monitor

Well I had all my tabs open, and saw Currys post their Gigabyte Gaming OC model at £410 five minutes early... and added it to basket... and then in a fit of conscientousness, went through the effort to log out of my work account and into my home account, by which point I had missed my shot

 

But! I did get a Palit model from Scan for £430 all in, soooooo guess I'm faffing about listing my 5700XT on eBay after all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

(I blame @ICTDirect_Dave, he is a bad influence, he has been enabling me on Skype)

 

ETA: related, anyone want a PowerColor Red Dragon 5700XT GPU for £370? Barely used, fully boxed! Going for £400 on eBay! Special Edugeek price!
