I'm sure I saw recently that SIMS is up for sale and they have stopped developing it?

I'd like to go to BETT, I couldn't go in 2020 as I was in India when it was on. If it still goes ahead, I'll make a decision the day before I go.

Sounds like both BETT and Excell are "expecting" to be able carry on in some capacity.

Jeremy Rees, CEO, ExCeL London has stated, “We are delighted that the government has confirmed the timetable for when business events and conferences can resume.Having played a full role in supporting the NHS, providing all of our facilities for the Nightingale Hospital, we are now looking forward to playing an equally active role in the nation’s economic recovery. The vast majority of the venue (90%) has been restored to its original state, with the remaining space secured as equipment storage for NHS Nightingale. This ongoing support will not impact the normal operation of our venue and we look forward to hosting safe, secure, and successful business events and conferences from 1st October onwards.”

I'm sure they are, but I find aligning your expectations with reality is usually a better way to end up avoiding disappointment.

Which is why I'm not crushed with disappointment that Karen Gillan isn't my wife. :D:D

Hard pass. Not worth the risk of cramming into a hall full of people from across the country to nab a few freebies.

And we wouldn't be able to go to the pub after.

There are quite a few coronavirus rules that the organisers are to introduce for the show as well, such as masks being worn throughout (by everyone), social distancing, a one-way systems and I suspect that actually getting hands-on with products will be difficult, especilly as they have a no physical contact (hand shaking etc.) and swapping of business cards rule for starters.

This will make the collection of freebies and brochures quite awkward I suspect.

Given the way we are spiking (largely due to more widespread testing detecting more cases) and judging it by the past (initial) spike, I don't think the infection rate will be back to an acceptable level by the end of Jan, especially factoring in a a possible winter spike too.

For exhibitors there are also a lot of logistic factors to consider too, such as can you room share? Which will increase accomodation costs considerably for exhibitors. Will you be able to feed your staff if restaurants are still limiting customer numbers due to social distancing (made especially harder due to the 8pm finish each day leaving little time to sort out meals)? And travelling on packed public transport each day.

Would companies, or even school, want to risk staff having to self isolate for two weeks after the show should there have been cases detected in the event. Lots of think about.

Ahhh.. so now we know why a SIMS 8 launch was rumoured. Much easier to launch a product people can't see properly, or interact with, or break simply by being too close to it and daring to click on something! :D

Starting to hear rumours of some big names pulling out of BETT 2021 due to the pandemic. Like... BIG big.

Looks like companies are going to start making their decision for them.

This is now on their website. Looks like they might try and take it online.

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Following the UK government’s announcement today that ‘plans to have the public return to conference centres have been paused’ we are further reviewing our plans for January. We remain hopeful of bringing the community back together safely, however with the new information from the government we are reassessing the possibility to do this in-person. We will be sharing further news with our customers and community in the coming days and weeks as the situation becomes clearer.Thank you as always for your support.

If they mean this announcement:

The spread of the virus is also affecting our ability to reopen business conferences, exhibition halls and large sporting events, so we will not be able to do this from 1 October.

then I think ‘reassessing the possibility to do this in-person [sic]’ is a euphemism for ‘we’re either doing it online or not at all’.

To be fair, a couple of concurrent live streams with various companies talking about their offerings and holding Q&As and polls would probably work very well.

I mean, it's hardly DC Fandome, but it worked for them! :D

I'd say the chances of a physical event are closer to zero than any other number. It would be better to start planning a virtual event and let us all know how best to access it.

These days, it isn't the show floor that interests me, more than the breakout meetings around the site. So I think this would suit me more so than the show itself.

Perhaps it will lead to being able to access those breakouts online in the future. The Microsoft one I went to this year was tightly packed in, in a very small room. I can see myself prefering to watch that online from the comfort of my office or home office... or even the Costa in the main foyer in the future! :D

Good to see a UK company taking a sensible public positon. Google and Microsoft, based on their working arrangements since lockdown are clearly never going to attend physically, I would expect others to follow their lead. (https://winbuzzer.com/2020/04/07/microsoft-switches-all-events-to-virtual-until-july-2021-xcxwbn/)

Also given that apparently "nurses who worked in the London Nightingale hospital during the early days of the pandemic were last week sent a “hint, hint” reminder that their training remains valid." (10/10/2020) the NHS Nightingale at Excel seems to me to be increasingly likely to get stood up again as flu* and covid cases fill the ICU's across the capital.

*flu nearly does this most years, which is where the "NHS close to collapse" annual winter stories come from.
