msi_school Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Does anyone have any recommendations for a good Web Host, I am have had some issues with support from our current provider and am looking to move our site. The website is Joomla based and is currently getting about 600 hits a day up from 350 - 400 at the same time last year. We also have three .co.uk domains and a .org that I would want to move to keep everything under one roof. Thanks
ZeroHour Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 As a rule I would move your domains to a different registrar from your host. We (EduGeek) use https://www.gandi.net/ for a lot of our domain management as they support 2FA and are a very decent registrar so far although make sure you document about 2FA when you set it up to allow others to gain access. Having the domains separate has no negative and if the host has issues you can easily move off. As for hosting, how hands off do you want it to be? If you are able to ssh and handle the setup yourselves that changes things from a more managed host that does it for you. 1

Digital ocean have a free plesk vm image, i htink its 3 domains limit or something but that would let you get a real webserver setup with very little linux knowhow for 5-10 usd a month 1

Personally I wouldn't recommend Plesk but that's from my own personal experience with it, most hosts use cPanel so it's just not worth using Plesk should you ever want to move in future, using a cPanel hosting provider will make it easier. I would beware of the large hosting groups such as GoDaddy and the Endurance International Group, they own a lot of hosting companies so you use any of them you'll effectively be being supported by the same people so if you've had an issue with one of them you'll likely have an issue with the other. If you have any extra requirements than the ones listed I can provide some potential hosts, the main question would be does it have to be a UK host or do you have no preference. 1

UK based, can transfer your domains and doesn't belong to Endurance International Group. I echo @NokiX comment above about avoiding 'big well known hosts'. Also if you're a nerd you'll love Krystal's stats page... 1

We are currently using TSOhost, our set up a quite complex due to a number of historical decisions and after a problem last month that took a long while to resolve I am hoping to move to a new host and set the website up in a logical manor. I would rather not manage my own web server as this lies outside my experience and it is one more thing to go wrong. I am now planning on moving all my domains to one supplier and the website to another. Mike
Securly_Chris Posted July 16, 2020 Posted July 16, 2020 Slighty different approach but I switched from dedicated VPS hosting for my personal stuff to using Amazon Lightsail. Good value and sits on AWS infrastructure. Haven't checked but you could probably get a Joomla instance too if you didn't want the hassle of maintaining your own updates. I know they do similar for Wordpress sites etc.
SimonHooker Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 I also make use of AWS for most of my hosting now, but the sites I've had to find hosts for lately have been static sites meaning I can just make use of S3 with Cloudfront in front to serve it cheaply. Lightsail can be a bit pricier than some alternatives but it is nice and easy to get started on, takes a lot of the pain out of getting started.
