dmartin1018 Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Does anybody actually bother with the Education version of Win 10. I can't find any differences and I've always stuck with Enterprise. Is it just a marketing thing or are there subtle differences that I've missed?

Michael Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 I deploy LTSB16 & LTSC19, both can be activated with MAKs. 1
timbo343 Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 (edited) LTSB and LTSC on domain devices with a KMS. On devices that go off site keep with the installed OS or Windows Ent with a MAK key. Edited June 16, 2020 by timbo343 1
mavhc Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Seems like the only difference is the adverts are turned off by default, why you still get adverts in Enterprise is another question. "Customers who deploy Windows 10 Enterprise are able to configure the product to have similar feature settings to Windows 10 Education using policies. More detailed information on these policies and the configuration steps required is available in Manage Windows 10 and Microsoft Store tips, tricks, and suggestions. We recommend that K-12 customers using commercial Windows 10 Enterprise read the document and apply desired settings for your environment." https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/configuration/manage-tips-and-suggestions You can turn them off with a regedit anyway, so I just stick to Pro and get it for free. 1

Really? none of my schools VLSC have MAK keys associated with ent only KMS ive started using pro workstation anyway, seems to have all the crap removed except xbox but i can deal with that 1
jthompson Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 We're using EDU here but not for any particular reason other than 'may as well'. I prefer to not swim against the Microsoft tide. I seem to remember someone on here mentioning that there could be some UWP/Store features down the line that might require EDU. Maybe some extra APIs or something: I didn't want to get snookered with some education app not able to work because we picked Enterprise during deployment. In truth I'm not aware of any functional difference. In terms of Pro vs EDU/Ent I avoided Pro for Win 10 simply because in Win7 days I mistakenly deployed it to a load of staff laptops before realising that BitLocker wasn't available. 1
Norphy Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Enterprise comes with various features that Pro doesn't that you might want to use in an Enterprise environment such as: Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) U-EV App-V Virtual Desktop Usage Rights Windows Defender Application Guard and Application Control You're able to manage store access and the consumer experiences on the Enterprise/Edu versions, which you can't do with Pro. The Enterprise/Edu versions also get 30 months of support on the September releases, while Pro doesn't My organisation is using several of those features, so Enterprise or Edu is the way to go for us. 1

dmartin1018 Posted June 16, 2020 Author Posted June 16, 2020 Win 10 Pro has bitlocker, so that's fineNeed to see what pro has that enterprise doesn't. We have OVS and are eligible for enterprise so I've never even given pro a 2nd thought but with someone saying pro workstation has all the crap removed, my ears have pricked up. I've got NTlite so it's not the end of the world either way
psydii Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 I think if you have M365 your devices activate and uplift to the Education SKU automatically. (assuming you've got a an oem windows 10 licence on the machine/firmware). Here are the published differences: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/education/windows/windows-editions-for-education-customers https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/education/windows/configure-windows-for-education We moved from deploying Enterprise to Education around 1603.
mavhc Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Your environment needs the following software to run Microsoft Defender Application Guard. TABLE 2 Software Description Operating system Windows 10 Enterprise edition, version 1709 or higher Windows 10 Professional edition, version 1803 or higher
Michael Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 Not all GPOs apply to Pro, only Ent or Edu versions.
Disease Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 We use Edu version here, no reason just thought why not.
gmonks Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 We use Education here too. At the time seemed the best option and still is for us.
