chazzy2501 Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 I'd give it a C+ or B-. Terrible support, great hardware, meh software.
Mr.Ben Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 I'd give it a C+ or B-. Terrible support, great hardware, meh software.Confirmed/Seconded on the terrible support - re-iterate that you should always wait a.few weeks before applying the latest firmware :-)
supportman Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Confirmed/Seconded on the terrible support - re-iterate that you should always wait a.few weeks before applying the latest firmware :-) Why apply it at all?
Mr.Ben Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 I like to live dangerously...... :-) But seriously, there have been occasions when I did need to do it and one memorable one that caused the guest portal to fail to resolve. This was a.confirmed problem that wasn't fixed for 2 months!
Simcfc73 Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 I installed the latest version the other day, now every time I roam between access points it loses its connection and asks me to sign in again.
AJWhite1970 Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 I installed the latest version the other day, now every time I roam between access points it loses its connection and asks me to sign in again. 4.0.80 or 4.3.13?
Davit2005 Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 (edited) The only issue with Unifi is it is very much proprietary, which is fine if you want to keep in the Unifi eco system ( similar to a few other solutions that is for sure). But it does not give many (if any) options if you want to manage with third party solutions. You are more or less locked into using their software. Edited May 15, 2020 by Davit2005
Simcfc73 Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 4.0.80 or 4.3.13? 4.3.13 Agree that it doesn't play nice with others.. never got it to talk to Sophos XG properly.

Thats a bit like saying if you buy HPE switching you have to use their CLI. It goes without saying and is commonplace. Cisco have their own CLI, etc etc What third party solution would you want to use to manage your switching and WiFi?

But you have to use the controller to manage Unifi Kit whether that is Unifi Video/Protect/AccessPoints/USG/Switches. There are solutions out there that you can use to manage other manufacturers equipment if you want to. You can use the software built into the switch i.e. HP ProVision, Aruba ProVision/Comware or Cisco IOS, Juniper JunOS but that is common with a lot of switches but there are products to allow you to manage different manufacturers kit, can you do that with Unifi??? I'm not saying by any means that Unifi is bad kit, it will suit a lot of organisations but not all. I implemented Ruckus at a previous employment about 9 years back and given the choice now for the 25 APs we needed, Unifi would of probably gone in. Where I work now we use Aruba but we have 2400 APs with multiple controllers with redundancy. Edited May 15, 2020 by Davit2005

Davit2005 Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 I don't need to be specific I am just pointing something out.
Primus Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 I don't need to be specific I am just pointing something out. Well unless you’re able to identify said solutions it makes your post pointless doesn’t it?
Davit2005 Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 (edited) Well unless you’re able to identify said solutions it makes your post pointless doesn’t it? If I am saying that you cannot manage said manufacturer kit with anything other than said manufacturer software i do not think it is pointless at all. There may be a scenario where multiple vendors kit is used and it is useful to manage with one piece of software just as it use useful to see all of Unifi kit in one management interface, what is wrong with that. And I’m saying give examples of said solutions. You’re the one saying they exist and can’t be used with Unifi but can with other products...
Davit2005 Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 And I’m saying give examples of said solutions. You’re the one saying they exist and can’t be used with Unifi but can with other products... I might just as well say show me a third party software that can manage Unifi. I know one exists that can manage third party vendors, admittedly not all but it does exist.

This is ridiculous - you said a downside of Unifi is that you can't manage it with third party software, I asked for an example of such software and you're unable or unwilling to provide said example! A further point is why would you want to - the Unifi controller is both easy to use and powerful.

It gives you all that information if you are in the whole ECO system for which it is very, very good at. But say you do not have the whole eco system, you may have HP switches, Cisco router then it is not so good. You are still tied down to using one software platform to do any form of management. A further point is why would you want to - the Unifi controller is both easy to use and powerful. If I buy something like AirWave from Aruba, that will not only manage Aruba/HPE switches and wireless, that will manage Cisco, Juniper and other manufacturers as well. I could use it to monitor and manage an Aruba wireless network and a Cisco wired network. In theory it could manage anything which can be talked to over SSH or SNMP. Not every has, can have or even wants a single vendor network. Can Airwave manage Unifi/Ubquiti stuff as well? I don’t know, I don’t know enough about that platform. If you can’t see why managing kit from multiple vendors in one interface might be useful, well, frankly that’s on you.
Primus Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Well Unifi kit supports both SNMP and SSH access so.....
synaesthesia Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Generally those products all use MIB which I believe is usually SNMP based and yes, Unifi supports those fully - I've had our old UniFi system set up with the old Procurve platform (was it PCM?) before without any problems or drawbacks other than being more basic than the manufacturers own tools, but that goes for any manufacturer.
FN-GM Posted May 16, 2020 Author Posted May 16, 2020 (edited) But say you do not have the whole eco system, you may have HP switches, Cisco router then it is not so good. I don’t really understand why that is a problem. Different products require different management anyway. I don’t plan to use Unifi switches as they don’t have the features I require. I will probably go with Cisco Catalyst. They have undercut the big players such as HP etc. Edited May 16, 2020 by FN-GM
AJWhite1970 Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 Have you had a look at the feature set of the new Gen 2 switches with 4.3.23 installed?
