Correct, they were not allocated in that way. It may be they are thinking of laptops that may be provided as part of a pupil premium or LAC (looked after children) grant which would then belong to them. The devices from last year via the DFE belong to the school once that pupil has left.

Thank you. I found out the student went into care in July - so i think its a case of crossed wires.

Really? I'd been told the ones which came via the LA belonged to the child, not us.

We were told the same. LA maintained school here.

Is that for a non-academy LA controlled school? Not aware of nayone other than the DFE dishing them out!

No, we're an academy. We had some directly from the DfE for our Year 10 disadvantaged students (which belong to the school), and some from DfE via LA for students in-care/with a social worker (which I had been told belong to the child).

This might be where the confusion is from for us; How did you tell them apart?

Quite easily. The direct-from-DfE ones came to the school and we had tracking details for the shipment. The one from the LA was dropped off in Reception by someone who didn't identify themselves and said they were dropping off a laptop for a student then left; the box had a student's initials on but no other information - we had to contact LA to find out who it was for!

We've been told that the LA ones are property of the school.

Well, no, we haven't, not quite, but we've been told they will be at some point. The gov' are switching off their filtering/etc in October 2021 so the guy from the council I've been emailing says that the school will have to take responsibility for them at some point between now and then, and then they'll be ours.

I just seen first one that was given to "looked after" pupil - he got directly from LA and it has LA asset sticker and his login is with LA domain ([email protected]). We needed to set it up with our domain. So far we have received around 30 chromebooks from DfE - but it was sorted by LA and we were told these are ours to keep.

I know we have to deal within the rules, but given they seem to be... Open to interpretation?

I am the only one that thinks "just give this kid the laptop" ?

The poor kid has just been taken into care. What other chance have they got of being bought a laptop that's needed for their education? A school has some hope/funds for buying an extra laptop if someone decides it's a priority.

How many of you have several unclaimed laptops for this reason just sitting around?

If by 'several' you mean 'about half our allocation', yup. Right here. We sent letters home to all parents who's pupils had been allocated one (we require a parent/guardian/etc to sign the loaned quipment agreement) and haven't heard back from half of them. We even had a few that outright refused.

I agree - I don't wanna be a block for any student getting a laptop. What I am up for though, is getting them a better laptop through their LAC grant cos these DFE ones stink :eyebrows:

Unfortunately, the families who would be eligible are often the ones who are harder to reach and engage with. Our pastoral team all have school mobile phones because some parents will only communicate with us via text.

We've still got half our second batch here. Problem for us is that they had already been issued with school laptops before the DFE scheme started up so the student/parents don't have any real incentive to get back to us, especially when they find out the DFE laptops are substantially lower specked than the ones we already gave them.

I read somewhere on here we can apply for laptops for those children who are unable to attend school at all because they have been advised not to by medical professionals.?

Any ideas?

Unless it's special circumstances you wait to be invited to order, the trigger is linked to the information your school will be submitting to the DfE daily before noon (Educational Setting Status Form).

That Education Setting Status form only asks about students with EHCP or a social worker, but the information at Get Help With Tech refers to special circumstances for "disadvantaged students" (without definition, but which I take to include PP among others) who need to shield. Does this mean we can request laptops for 1) EHCP/LAC/with social worker students who are self-isolating, 2) disadvantaged students (defined by us) who are shielding, but not 3) disadvantaged students who are self-isolating?

So I got this DfE laptop, HP 250 G7. Managed with some difficulty to run my own EXEs, small security flaw, not too bad. Then I noticed the bios was set to allow usb boot! Is that true of HPs anyone else has received? Makes all the security pointless

We have the same problem, students just not returning the laptops. Heads of house chasing parents up, we have enough DFE laptops here just sitting in our storeroom!

Is this a surprise to anyone??

clearly some school will have a worse problem than others - but it was always clear that 'some people' would refuse to give them back

I presume that the people in charge have made plans for this

(say this last bit is a sarcastic tone)
