Where you bought your domain name from would typically have some kind of dashboard. External senders will need to be able to resolve your domain names email server to an IP address somehow.

 

I run an postfix server for SMTP at home as some of my hardware (UPS for instance) have no built in method for email authentication. It is a PITA but it is not available outside the network. If you are exposing a server to the internet I can only stress to make sure it is updated and as secure as possible, follow best practices, etc.

 

TBH I just use Office 365 now with a custom domain name, I've been down the route of admin of onsite exchange about 5 years ago for a reasonable sized org and not anymore, lol.

 

I run an AD server at home and use Azure AD Connect to sync a few users.

I bought my domain from Go daddy, this is my home lab to test.. i am learning so i want to setup and test everything. i will go and try office 365 in future as well.

O365 custom domain feature has got ridiculously easy to set up now. When I added the custom domain it said "Do you want to use this for emails?" After I clicked yes, it said "We'll take you to your domain provider" which it identified. Within O365 I had to give permission for it to access my domain records and it then made the required edits.

You should be able to manage DNS settings in you GoDaddy admin page. How you actually do this step by step will be different between providers. GoDaddy may have a help section to guidde you.

Yeah. I moved my lab off of Exchange 2019 and onto Office 365 because Microsoft locked the CUs behind VLSC. Meaning no security updates without a volume licence! Even though they support the use of the trial in a homelab.....

I did the same ,much simpler than setting up exchange and office 365 is the go to email system at this time
