jmak Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 So tempted on the Prestige Euph but I think my wife would suitable kill me - especially as we now have a baby :-)It's the perfect time: you won't be heard above the baby [emoji16] (But don't play when it's asleep.)
stevejp Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 I really, really, REALLY should not have clicked on that link! Miss my sovereign Euph so much, and the very thought of upgrading my trombone to a VB ....
elsiegee40 Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 @BKGarry @witch (yes I know French Horn is woodwind, but I thought you might be interested)
jmak Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) @BKGarry @witch (yes I know French Horn is woodwind, but I thought you might be interested)Careful with that [emoji51] Definitely appear in the brass category for BBC Young Musician. Also in brass quintets. And often in the pub with the other brass players [emoji57] Edit: Some entertaining answers given by clarinetists here: http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=161459&t=161459 Edit 2: As I don't want to become an amphibian, I should make it clear that I wouldn't dream of speaking for @witch but 100% of the 2 French Horny Dudes[emoji769] I know consider themselves brass players. hardtailstar Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 What I'm getting from this is an Edugeek band.... I have a trumpet....
witch Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) @BKGarry @elsiegee40 A FRENCH HORN HAS NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER BEEN WOODWIND Neither is it Brass - evinced by its non- appearance in Brass Bands (other than occasionally when they need the music elevating a bit) A Horn is a Horn. We are the Horn section. In an orchestra, the conductor will say "Brass and Horns" as we are NOT part of the brass section. Every single one of the Horns I know - and I know many, (approx 40) including the entire Horn section of the BSO - call themselves Horns, not Brass They are all orchestral players, even though some of us are in concert bands, so maybe that is the difference I would love to play in an Edugeek band though - couldnt we just start a band? With whatever instruments we have? *and I am definitely NOT a "Horny Dude" Edited April 9, 2020 by witch 1
stevejp Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) Ok, at the risk of becoming amphibious, I’ll add my two-pennorth: A horn is a wind instrument (as are all brass and woodwind) but not woodwind. It is most definitely a brass instrument in terms of construction, materials, method of sound production, but from my (not inconsiderable) experience of orchestral playing over the last 35 :rolleyes:years, the major issues appear to be quite a few horn players refusing to have anything to do with that uncouth lot at the other end of the row - ie, they are brass players, but would rather not associate themselves with the brass section. Check out the pub at the end of the gig; the trombones and trumpets are in the bar, the tuba player is usually under a table somewhere, the viola section have gone to the wrong pub and the horn section are in the lounge with the oboes. (The percussion are still back at the venue packing up, but that’s a gripe for another time...) And, before anyone brings up the rotary valve ‘thing’, please search for Canadian Brass on YouTube (Pachelbel’s Canon or the Bach toccata and fugue in D minor are both well worth listening to) and check out the valves on Chuck Daellenbach’s tuba. Now, if anyone needs me, I’ll be in the pond... Edited April 9, 2020 by stevejp 1
witch Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) Never had a problem mixing with Brass players outside the orchestra - they are so childlike and cute Inside? They may be on the same row but THERE IS A GAP between us and them A horn is believed to be one of the hardest instruments to play, Don't think you can say that of the brass instruments Yes, a Horn is MADE of brass - doesnt make it a brass instrument though. Any more than being made of brass makes a sax a brass instrument Edited April 9, 2020 by witch 1

(but I know I’m right - and if you don’t believe me check out the mouthpieces on a horn and a trumpet...) Edited April 9, 2020 by stevejp

elsiegee40 Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 Everyone. My apologies. I think I started this. All seems to have got unexpectedly heated. Sorry!
localzuk Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 A quick search online reveals that horns are basically, as someone referred to them, the tomato of the orchestra. They are neither and both woodwind/brass, but are most often referred to simply as horns, as their own thing. So it looks kinda like you're all kinda right. In a popular music sense, they get called brass generally. But that's not really saying much as popular music does what popular music wants to. Now, is a jaffa cake a biscuit or a cake? [emoji23] 1
stevejp Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) Right about what? A horn and trumpet mouthpiece are very different - not sure what you mean? Yes, they produce music in a similar way - dont deny that, . But in my case, umptymillion years of orchestral playing and being called Horns and not Brass means that AFAIC I am not brass So there It’s what I initially said about the method of sound production - all brass instruments work in the same way; the vibration started by the buzzing of lips against the rim of the mouthpiece makes the column of air inside the brass tubing vibrate, making the sound. Which is why, incidentally, a saxophone is not a brass instrument, because it uses a reed. Not heated, @elsiegee40, or at least not on my part - but having been a brass player and conductor in a variety of orchestras, brass bands, wind bands and brass ensembles at various points over the last 50 years, I have played most brass instruments at one point or another - including both French and tenor horn. French horn was undoubtedly the trickiest, although I still think the oboe was the most difficult instrument of all the ones that I’ve attempted to play (apart from the triangle of course...) stevejp Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 My finger is very itchy on there! I’ve deliberately not gone back to look!
witch Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 (edited) It's fine - and very interesting to see how different perceptions can be. I will go with what @localzuk said although I have never heard of a horn described as woodwind. All I know is - I play the French Horn. That is what I do. That is what I am. I have never been referred to as brass, nor would I want to be. Yes, my horn, Henry, is made of brass. Yes my horn produces sound the same way as other brass instruments. I play a left-handed, predominantly rotary valved instrument whereas the brass are right handed, piston valved instruments, (barring the slide trombone) . If you can play one brass instrument, I believe you can play them all? Not the case with the French Horn. So - similar but different. I must go now, I need to practise Beethoven 1 as I have a concert with the Berlin Phil tomorrow Edited April 10, 2020 by witch 1

witch Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 For those that have no friends who play instruments. Love it! I can tell the horn player is trying SO hard not to laugh!! I miss playing SO much. Should have been in Wimborne Minster playing lovely Christmas music with my band We definitely should start a band - can do it virtually now we have the technology! 1
