nathan Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 We currently have 17 websites hosted with TSOHOST, they used to be brilliant.... they are now not. I'm starting to do some research into alternatives and wondered what everyone else used. I'm after; - a single hosting package that will allow me to host multiple websites - SSD storage - It will be hosting either wordpress or Joomla (unfortunately) websites
Sibrows Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 We've moved most of our websites and apps to Digital Ocean. You can scale the droplet size. If your after an all-in-one control panel then we've been using Plesk, the free option is limited to three websites but thats encouraged us to not have too many websites running on one droplet.

Sibrows Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 We've got a secondary and two primary websites running on their cheapest droplet with Plesk managing the websites. We've added some block storage to it we're using Plesk to run daily backups of the sites (we're using Wordpress) then the droplet is snapshotted once a week and retained for four weeks all for less than £10 pcm.
dhicks Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 I'm starting to do some research into alternatives and wondered what everyone else used. I use OVH for assorted hosting purposes. Depending on how much traffic you're expecting over the whole set of sites you want to host, one of their standard small instances (about £3.80 a month) might well be enough, possibly with a disk space upgrade. I have various services run behind an Nginx reverse-proxy, which I actually found suprisingly easy to set up.
AndreaRamirez Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 I can recommend only one host that I like the most and it is Cloudways. I have been using it's Magento hosting service for my ecommerce store from last 2 years and I have found the pleasant hosting experience. They provide managed hosting service of 5 top cloud hosting provider available in the industry namely AWS, DigitalOcean, GCE, Linode and Vultr.
RobD Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 Another for Krystal, here's a referal for a £10 off too: 4070f032 1
Forasizo Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 UnlimitedWebHosting are quite good - or EZPZ Hosting, I was with them for many years before I moved to my own kit.
Jobos Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Does DNS hosting come as standard with web hosting or is it a chargeable add-on?
Jobos Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Usually it's free, with Krystal it is. Thanks for the update.
vizubeat Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Always had good results with Invisional Hosting - ran by a guy that used to work in schools IT, good value hosting, I've got a 'shared' hosting and multi-site package for some personal stuff
Steve21 Posted October 3, 2020 Posted October 3, 2020 Out of curiosity, those of you using things like Krystal/OVH etc for Wordpress, are you doing it on their "wordpress offerings" or just a VPS with your own installs? Just wondering in terms of specification, as things like Krystal wordpress offerings are all on very limited resources (1cpu/1gb), but obviously offer all the lite caching etc options, compared to a higher spec VPS in the first place Steve
v1images Posted February 6, 2021 Posted February 6, 2021 With OVH I had migrated from a VPS on my own configuration/setup and worked no problem off the bat on an OVH Dedicated package.
kxv2020 Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 Did you choose the Onxy package or something else?
Steve21 Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 Did you choose the Onxy package or something else? We went with the Onyx package in the end and very happy with it so far (Was going to go with the cheaper one, but the school wanted the higher resources etc as apparently they've had issues in the past with cheaper hosts so would prefer higher spec for when it gets the hits on open evenings etc) Steve 1
kxv2020 Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 We went with the Onyx package in the end and very happy with it so far (Was going to go with the cheaper one, but the school wanted the higher resources etc as apparently they've had issues in the past with cheaper hosts so would prefer higher spec for when it gets the hits on open evenings etc) Steve Thanks - I’m guessing you went for the pro? The bit that concerns me is 50k visitor number per month - do you ever find you reach that ?
Norphy Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 I use SGIS Hosting. I think the Pro package ticks most of your boxes https://sgis.co.uk/hosting/full-hosting-features.php 1
Steve21 Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Thanks - I’m guessing you went for the pro? The bit that concerns me is 50k visitor number per month - do you ever find you reach that ? Yes to both of those, however we asked about the limit previously, and they said it's not a hard cap more a recommendation, so it's not like it blocks it etc. I think it's more a if you say you need 10k and use 1million they might complain But not had any issues so far (obviously in the first year still so guess time will tell) 67,857 - visitors this month (is this months counter to give you an example, bearing in mind it's on unique IPs etc not repeat visitors) Steve 1
malware Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 (edited) When I'm not self-hosting I have used Krystal, decent company and UK based. If you go the VPS route, I have used Vultr for a year or two and has been great. Edited May 29, 2021 by malware
gomalley Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 Just to add to this thread for anyone who finds the topic - I want to scream at TSOHost who migrated us to their new server on Saturday and both school sites I host with them have been down in one form or another since (into day 3 now). Looking at Krystal from comments above the free migration they offer seems good, as well as not the huge costs that TSO now want to charge me!

Was that an optional move or a scheduled "upgrade" they had to do? In terms of Krystal, make sure that if your school is a registered charity that you provide your charity number as Krystal provide a free Amethyst package for registered UK charities or a 50% discount on other hosting products. 2
