So, for £90k, you basically have to make sure you tape a banana to your own wall on at least a weekly basis.

I sometimes think that the hardest part about being a non-"pictorial" artist must be coming up with an idea so staggeringly ridiculous that people will see it as "art" and hand over the big bucks. cf. Tracey Emin's "My Bed" (£2.5 million in 2014!).

One I really liked was one that I saw in the Baltic in Gateshead, back in 2006. It was a table of fruit with electrodes stuck into it that were connected to tiny circular saws. The acid from the decaying fruit powered the saws, which slowly cut into the table legs, thereby perpetuating the cycle of self-destruction.

Not something I'd have done. It might have been injected with art poison (y'know, because art), covered in art germs or been handled by an art assistant who'd previously handled some art elephant poo or something else art-related.

So the banana gets eaten and is replaced. Every week or so the banana needs to be replaced anyway as otherwise it will rot. The only original thing then is the duct tape. Surely after several banana changes the tape will lose it's adhesion and then also need replacing. Still worth $120k?

Yeah - but what you don't understand is that it's art

 

it is the concept and the idea above all else so the piece of art is still valid even though the banana has been eaten and the tape has been chucked in the bin and replaced

 

to show you how it works I have requested the Louvre to send me the Mona Lisa which I will video being treated with paint remover and taken back to bare canvas (or board or whatever) after which my 7 year old Granddaughter will redraw the picture using felt tip pens

The CONCEPT will still be clear and hence the art will still be valid

 

I'll put the video on YouTube as soon as it is complete - just waiting for the painting to arrive - think it's been delayed in the Christmas post
