Sheridan Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 Dear me, what have I just watched!? Probably the worst thing in decades and an absolutely murdered remake of a classic. Awful acting, tedious plot that veered off on stupid tangents and BBC's PC department making sure every box was ticked whether it made sense or not. The invasion of earth by the martians seemed to be incidental to the camera operator as it panned around her face staring into empty space for minutes at a time. The lead male character was so hapless I was rooting for the martians to get him asap, although I guess the BBC had a few things on their agenda a) strong female lead b) gormless male lead c) anti-empire comments at every opportunity d) overblown 'arty' camera shots for every time the female lead was speaking. 3 hours long, and had 10 minutes of plot. Maybe I'll buy the BBC the book for christmas so they can read the actual story.

Remaking the old 50's series (i.e set in the 1890's) with better effects and so on would have been worthwhile.

It's been done. Just dressing it up with better special effects would be fairly pointless. And the 2005 film was awful, although having Tom Cruise in a film generally tips a film towards the "awful" end of the spectrum in my opinion. While I agree that the BBC's latest effort fell flat, at least they tried something different with it. Redoing the same thing over and over gets boring.

LeMarchand Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 I thought you didn't have a license? I'm going to have to watch this to see if it's as bad as everyone is saying. I'm normally highly suspicious when guys complain about those damn wimmin ruining their films/shows (I quite liked the recent Ghostbusters and don't have a problem with Rey or Captain Marvel) but I trust you guys more. Anyway, if it's as bad as people are saying, this might be the straw that breaks the camel's back after the shocking pro-Tory bias they've been showing of late.
3s-gtech Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 I enjoy lots of ‘bad’ TV, and especially films (hell, I like loads of Tom Cruise films from the 80s to now) but this production was dire. It’s supposed to have some positivity in the story!

MartinT Posted December 3, 2019 Posted December 3, 2019 To be honest, I thought it better than the dire Philip Pullman effort (His Dark Materials), where the acting of all except the lead girl was so wooden that distant shots of the airships were a welcome relief.

MartinT Posted December 3, 2019 Posted December 3, 2019 If you want a really good SF adaptation, try The Expanse based on the James SA Corey books (the first of which is Leviathan Wakes). Very nice depiction of the worlds with detail aplenty and mostly believable characters. Excellent production quality.

Not a patch on the books though Even if the two writers who make up James S A Corey are involved.

Exactly - nobody has faithfully adapted the book, they always add their own "MAKE IT RELEVANT!" slant. I'd pay good money for a Jeff Wayne-based TV series/movie. Lots of good money. 1

Such a shame really, I read a basic review claiming episode 1 was quite good but heard nothing but bad on how it ended at episode 3. There is an American version coming out and the trailer seems pretty good. A touch of walking dead style on survival with War of the Worlds element. I have high hopes on this one.
