Getting mrwITch to go and do exercise? Hahahahahahahahaha

In the last lockdown I got him to walk maybe 4 times a week in the evenings but now it is dark by the time he finishes work, no chance.

The coffee thing is ingenious but tbh the only exercise he gets is walking downstairs to make coffee or get a drink of water! I will look at the thrustmaster thanks

 

Any other ideas?

He says he doesnt need anything for his NEW 3D printer (Creality something) but if anyone knows of anything I can get for it that he will love even if he doesn't know it yet, please let me know!

If he does like coffee, an Aeropress and a burr grinder?

 

Thirty years ago I would have said "YES" but as he gets older he cares less and less about the quality of coffee at home.

Maybe an ebike makes it a gadget and not a fitness machine??

and he can use his 3D printer to make things for it

(I have a few designed and ready to go - but don't have a printer - don't ask why I made the design!)

 

but then again - probably not - and they are expensive!

Dark chocolate orange! It' a winner every time! This is interesting - this mid range budget seem to be where many of us struggle. I either want something that's really cheap so would have bought it as I go, or crazy expensive so either a long term purchase or never bought. Does Mr Witch have any interest in the garden? Or craft based activities, like model making etc.?

We have many mugs - he doesnt care about them

He only wears a specific type of black sock

He doesnt wear slippers (tbf, nor do I)

He doesnt like chocolate orange

He will wear a weird fish or similar t shirt as long as the big logo is on the back. He doesnt really like the small logo on the front but has got used to it

 

He loves fudge, chocolate, liqorice allsorts (must be Bassetts though) and Toblerone. But the children buy him all that

They usually buy him real ale too but he forgets to drink it.

 

He touches the earth lightly.

He likes books but only sci-fi. He plays Elite and that's all

His hobby was fiddling about writing computer programs and such (he is a software enterprize technical architect by trade)

Now his only hobby is the 3D printer - but mostly he fiddles as "it isnt level" or "the filament is getting stuck" or something. He doesn't produce anything!

He likes fiddling with his camera and has even done some courses but doesnt seem to want to take it any further

 

He does like to travel and do things like ride zip wires or do these Red Letter Day type thing. Not even bookable at the moment

I've tried a few edits of this and I still think it might come across as being a bit sulky or sarcastic, but it's really not meant to be. I really don't want people who care about me to spend ages thinking of something I didn't even know I wanted.

 

I am a total pain to buy presents for and people get really upset when I say I don't want anything. But I really don't. I'm not upset when everyone else is excitedly opening theirs and I am happy to spend money on other people.

 

People know I like coffee. Guess what? I researched ways to make coffee and bought the one I wanted. I have at least 5 other devices for making coffee that I don't use.

 

If he really likes Bassett's liquorice all sorts, buy a year's supply? (But not to eat in one go - that can have an unfortunate effect!)

 

If you need him to have something to open on the day (that's apparently a requirement in our house) buy something for yourself and wrap it up...

 

I hope that's not entirely unhelpful [emoji849]

Not very romantic or anything

 

but I have a lendwithcare account where I lobbed some money in (remember when our syndicate at work won the lottery??) and it gets loaned to people in developing countries who need money to start or expand a small business

 

they pay it back and it goes back into your account with them

every so often you get an email saying who has paid the loan back and how much

then you can log in and send the money to other people

 

just an idea - it makes me feel involved and at least I know my money is going somewhere useful and not to a big admin office

 

or you could buy him a goat for a remote village - that used to be a thing - I remember a school I was at putting all the money we normally spent on Christmas cards into a fund for one

 

or a guide dog where you get progress reports (and a cuddly guide dog toy)

@jmak No, I understand and I do get it. The thing is that several years running - with the lovely Dave of ICT Direct's help last year, I have given him something that he didnt know he wanted but was absolutely thrilled to get - and I love that feeling of watching someone you care about being very happy because of something you gave them.

mrwITch wouldn't mind if he got very little from me but it is MY wish to get him something that he will love.

 

I come on here and ask because he is an IT geek and you lot understand people like him :)

It's a good entry-level jostick, but isn't the most durable. With a good hotas you need to spend a fair amount of money unfortunately.

 

I know that, but it's the only thing near the budget!

If he's into gaming maybe a basic Elgato Stream Deck (6 button version?) I know they're primarily for streaming but can be customised to run any macro you want, might be helpful for in game stuff? Currently £79 on Amazon but I'm waiting for Black Friday to see what happens... Edited by SamDavis

You said he has a Creality printer, do you know the model and if he has added any aftermarket mods to it? If its for example a stock Ender of any model there are probably a ton of mods and addon's you could get. The two problems you just mentioned can be reduced/solved with mods.

Takes some set up and firmware changes but will auto level the bed which removes one of the biggest headaches.

Another common issue with filament printing is that the filament gets "wet" which causes problems with misfeeds, layer adhesion issues and general print quality problems. Lots of people will using some form of dehydrator to dry the filament before using it. A normal food dehydrator can work fine but will need to be modified to fit the spools in.

 

A glass print bed (if it doesn't already have one) is also a fairly cheap but significant upgrade.

 

Print nozzles should probably be considered a consumable and are pretty cheap so could make a useful "make up" present.

 

There is also a laser engraver mod available that might be fun to play with and isnt too expensive. Make sure you get some decent eye protection to go along with this though.

Yep, he's read them. :)

I cant see a model number on his 3D printer. I know he went through all the glass bed and leveller stuff with his old printer but I dont know about this one. I shall have to try and find out more!

One of the world’s most fiendish literary puzzles – a murder mystery in which all the pages are out of order – has been solved for just the third time in almost a century.

 

Cain’s Jawbone was dreamed up by the Observer’s first cryptic crossword inventor, Edward Powys Mathers, who was known as Torquemada. First published in 1934, it invites the reader to reorder the book’s 100 pages – there are more than 32m possible combinations – and solve the murders within.

 

“The pages have been printed in an entirely haphazard and incorrect order, a fact which reflects little credit on somebody,” wrote Powys Mathers at the time. “The author assures his readers, however, that while it is now too late for him to remedy the ordering of the pages, it is quite possible for them, should they care to take the trouble, to re-order them correctly for themselves.”

 

Just two readers managed to solve the puzzle in the 1930s, Mr S Sydney-Turner and Mr W S Kennedy, both of whom won £25.

 

The solution was then thought to be lost, but three years ago the Laurence Sterne Trust was presented with a copy of The Torquemada Puzzle Book, and Shandy Hall curator Patrick Wildgust embarked on a mission to solve it. Once he did, the mystery was reissued last autumn by Unbound, with the publisher offering a £1,000 prize to anyone who could solve it within a year. It warned, however, that the competition was not “for the faint-hearted”, and that the puzzle was “phenomenally difficult”...

We both loved Killjoys but don't rewatch stuff as a rule. Although I am thinking very hard about rewatching Justified as we loved it

 

So..so far I have bought the dessicator or whatever it is called. I had to tell him though so I got the right one.

I would like to get the laser thing too but the link I got was one that had very bad reviews. Anyone seen a different one?
