JATSO Posted November 11, 2019 Posted November 11, 2019 My Partner just messaged me and said that a nice mannered support rep had called and said they were going to cut our internet connection off because of illegal activities on our IP address. She then said she had given him all our details to keep us secure, passwords, bank account, hours of work etc. Its re-assuring and makes you feel safe doesn't it when your partner has your back. 3

Although those particular scammers seem to have switched to Amazon Prime as their employer. I don’t answer calls from numbers I don’t recognise. Ever. If it’s important they’ll leave a message.
CHiLL Posted November 11, 2019 Posted November 11, 2019 (edited) You always hope the people closest to you have some common sense when it comes to online scams, especially given that their SO is in the tech industry but sadly that isn't always the case . I hope you're already making the necessary calls and changes required. We've actually had our headteacher call us about that scam. These companies have managed to get her DDI from somewhere and have been leaving her voicemails. She thought our school connection was being shut off for 'illegal activities'. While my partner is very savvy about scams and such, she thinks I should always answer the phone "just in case it's important". Nope! Got no time for that - 99% of unknown-number calls I get are either Bitcoin scams, "you've been in an accident" scams or just plain telemarketing rubbish.

Jim Browning does upload considerably infrequently, but when he does it's always incredibly informative and usually the months of radio silence are because he's been infiltrating and information gathering. He's the educational side of scams, going into methods, the scripts, and back-hacking them to find out about their call centres etc and pass information off to the police. Kitboga is just hilarious, and is the amusing face of scambaiting, with multiple stereotyped personas like a gun-totin' USA-lovin' Texan, an airheaded teenage ditz, and good ol' Granny Edna. He is still somewhat informative though, just in a bit more of a casual/passive way. He operates a fake bank site so you can see them doing the inline HTML editing, but also has a fake Amazon site where he can 'buy' anything he likes with the extra money he's 'accidentally been sent' like $2,000 watches etc.
FishCustard Posted November 11, 2019 Posted November 11, 2019 The best Kitboga clip IMO is where he "redeems" Google Play gift cards on a fake page that he created (I think it's actually injected JS using a browser plugin on the real page) after stringing the scammer along for about five hours!

witch Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 I usually tell them what they are about to tell me, eg event logs etc. Then I ask if they believe in God and what do they think God would think about them trying to scam people. Sometimes I tell them that their mother would be ashamed of them. When I point out that they do NOT work for Openreach or whoever, some of them ARGUE with me. It is great fun. I always answer my phone because of hospital appointments and father in law who use that number.

JATSO Posted November 13, 2019 Author Posted November 13, 2019 Yes we get them at the school the staff all know the drill, I just have to keep reminding them by sending out an email so that new members of staff get the message as well and that is to pass the call onto me if I am in.

GrumbleDook Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 I have a very special VM set up just for such occasions ... running Windows 98SE and full of fun things. It is amazing how many remote tools don't run on Windows 98SE ... or how the word document with all my passwords *might* have a virus or two on there. To be honest, I don't have the time to mess with folk anymore ... and only save it for very special occasions.

We had exactly the same call to our office phone today (the incoming call was a recorded message) Seems a bit pointless to me.
