I'll log a ticket and see if I get anywhere - but I expect to be fobbed off, which normally happens!

Just to try and bring some life back to this thread - We have exactly the same problem here. SIMS locks up on 'Run' or 'Design' report, users are complaining and blaming it on the Server or the PC's, but the Server isn't under load, the PC isn't (Minus a sudden spike in CPU for a short while above) and then it comes back. Did you get yours resolved?

We've got an ActiveStorage mRaid storage server, that is attached to our Apple Network, on the first week of term (I mean when else would you decided to break?) it has decided to stop working. After extensive testing we have identified that one of the PSU has given up. ActiveStorage seem to have gone from the market place and exist in the US, we have contacted them and they have agreed with our prognosis, but the PSU are EOL and they have offered £425 plus shipping for a used PSU. They suggested I reach out to others (as they were popular in schools) to see if anyone has one sat collecting dust. I am on the hunt for ETASIS EFRP-465AL PSU, this is a long shot and I have pretty much set myself on replacing the entire server (due to it's age) but if anyone can help - if you don't ask you never know!

Satchel One do all of what you want and we use it successfully here both on web browsers and via the app on mobile devices, near same time write back to SIMS for the attendance team - who like you, still live on the desktop app

That makes life a lot easier if you have new servers, so what we did was build the new server and the structure while the existing RM servers ran the RM network. We utilised the same domain and created a new structure, security groups, deployments and users and Shares on the new servers. You can even promote new DC's without RM running it will be fine, then you can setup new client stations and test the environment as you build the Group Policies etc. Then when you are ready to switch, you can either migrate the users (if keeping the same usernames) and update their security groups, Homepaths over and start to decommission the RM servers from being DC's and take them off the domain so they remove their RM tentacles from your network. Once you've got your new environment setup along side your existing, as long as it's outside of what RM can see it is quite painless to make the migration.

Afternoon The School I am at now, when I took over was a RM CC4 network and I ripped it all out. Are you planning on utilising the same servers / domain? Or are you getting new hardware etc? As this will all impact upon the amount of work, when it came to moving away from RM I terminated the agreement and we did the migration ourselves. Are you keeping any support contract with RM? We couldn't wait to get away, so we made sure we made a clean break from RM and haven't looked back since! More than happy to give some pointers if this will help

Do you use Options Online without using SIMS Student?
Andy2789 replied to David44's topic in Cloud Services
We use SIMS Options without SIMS Students and have for a number of years. As with the above, we send out the invitations on mass using admin.sims.co.uk and assign them access to Options at this point. The only issue as again eluded to above is students following simple instructions, that they have to accept their invitations before they can go to options online. If they don't accept their invitation first, they can login to options online, but it's a blank screen with just the purple bar across the top. We utilise the sync with O365, so when they click the registration they link up with their O365. If they click the invitation first and then go to Options online, the process works seamlessly and we are using Options Online now more and more for Taster days and other scenarios across the school. The process for ours is: - Receive invitation - Click and accept invitation (Says invitation complete) - Click a link on the letter sent to them / Link on our website to Options Online - Do Online Options As mentioned, the only issue we have is where parents and students read the letter about options, skip the first bit of the letter which says complete the registrations and skip straight to logging in. -
It would be done via Exchange and a Mail flow rule, that if domain = X allow, if Domain doesn't = X, Send rejection message.

Get help with technology programme - how to claim?
Andy2789 replied to tmoon-mint's topic in How do you do....it?
Is anyone aware if claims is only available for external support, or if claims can be made for internal staffing costs to do the work... As it put a huge amount on IT teams internally to set them up, or is it only if you brought support in? Guidance is as clear as mud! -
If you want a cost effective and simply just the register on their timetable we use 'Reggie' which works well and is installed on devices. A lot cheaper than SIMS app and other options and works well, our PE department and other staff on the move use it.

Yeah - Still using RDPGuard to good effect, it does the job. We have it set to monitor for X3 failed login attempts and blocks the IP, we have also obscured our RDP port to something random and RDPGuard monitors that port. Since doing this, plus some firewall rules, still touch wood... All is well!

[ms office - 2019] Outlook Slow / Non Responsive
Andy2789 replied to Andy2789's topic in Office Software
Thank you again, will also have a look at that - It happens on mine with enhanced access as well, but you're right that it could be something that is affecting all users through the core filtering -

[ms office - 2019] Outlook Slow / Non Responsive
Andy2789 replied to Andy2789's topic in Office Software
Just on school internet, at home it doesn't happen, so I can't even blame M365, its something within our config onsite in Outlook or within Smoothwall:confused: -
Hope someone can help, as I am now scratching by head and pulling my hair out. We use Outlook 2019 linked to Office 365 Exchange, we suffer from (clients in school only) with lagging, slow to open emails, send emails, moving between emails. This isn't an add-on issue (there aren't any running), we have recently upgraded to a 1Gbps Lease line and it still happens. I am testing at the moment and I am the only one here, the bandwidth isn't in use, but it lags, locks and goes 'Not Responding' or you get the donut of doom. When you are outside of school using Outlook, using the web version it doesn't happen. I have got all the Microsoft sites whitelisted into the exceptions list, so they aren't going through the proxy, the bandwidth usage in non-existent. But I can't work out what is causing it to happen, staff are used to it locking up occasionally, but now we have a new lease line I am going to struggle to justify why it is happening? Outlook isn't running in Cache mode, so it's not a server latency, we are running a new Smoothwall S9 box but we still have issues - only with Outlook. Anyone had this issue, any Thoughts?

[sims] SIMS Options Online - blank screen for students
Andy2789 replied to tech-man's topic in MIS Systems
We had this issue, if they don't click the invite first and confirm they can login and get a blank page. So we find the invite had expired, or in most cases parents/students just click the link and sign in and not accept the invite email link first. Once they have pressed this we found that the problem goes away. -
We have got a Promethean Board (APT-70) that has stopped recognising USB connection. It's fixed to the wall, so it's not a case of cables being pulled out all the time. We have tried power draining, changing the USB, plugging directly into the board, different devices etc. On no device does it detect the board and appear as a device, the board is displaying fine via HDMI, VGA etc no problem and playing sound, there is just zero interactivity. We have had a response from Promethean which says it will cost £700 to come and look at the board, when it's just the USB I find that a little steep! Are there any local (to midlands) that offer to look at / repair boards? Or any suggestions!

Old School Antenna and Digital TV
Andy2789 replied to Warwick_Tech's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
One of my techs wanted a 'project' of their own so I gave them this, we already had an old PC setup doing similar. So I got them to go through the process from start to finish to give them some development. Pros:- Amazing for Network Traffic, again going back to Euro's when all schools were screaming or stealing the bandwidth to stream off the BBC. We used this server, we tested it before on over 90 machines at once - works perfectly every time- Once it is setup, it just works - Low budget once you have the kit Cons: - Because the guide is slightly out of date finding a copy of linux that played nice was a challenge - Be aware of proxy's we had to take it home download what was needed and come back again - Occasionally needs re-tuning which is a pain! (e.g. new channels added, ones removed) -
Old School Antenna and Digital TV
Andy2789 replied to Warwick_Tech's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
I know this is a 10 year old guide, but this is what we did to overcome this issue (worked wondered when it was the Euro's!) - Just thinking if this helps reducing the 150M run you have putting this closer to the source (antenna) https://angrytechnician.wordpress.com/2010/07/23/how-to-stream-every-channel-from-freeview-onto-your-network/ We had a dedicated server (old PC doing it) - We even upgraded the PC so we know the guide is still relevant. We just put a series of links on a shared area for each channel. Hopefully this may help? -
Totally! I mean students / Staff with Mac's can still access their Windows System remotely. But the Mac Network though links to our domain, the files are on the Mac Network SAN as all the files (or most) relate to the specialist software on the Mac's so we keep them deliberately seperate.

So these are the jobs that we have got setup, that in the schedule backup the required server(s) and then pointed at the relevant repository, the schedule then matches to run e.g. Friday 3 is told to run on the third Friday of every month and to look for the Friday 3 repository These are the drives for each of the jobs Then these are the repository which are told are rotating drives, so it keeps up with the lettering. To make it easier we make it so the Repository names the folder after itself, so if someone doesn't change the drive or there is an issue. You can easily identify what is going on
-
No problem, give me a few mins to get some screen grabs. Finding the right backup to restore is the reason why we have done a repository for each drive and then mapped the jobs against the drive, so we know a Monday job refers to a Monday repository, and a Monday Drive. We don't use secondary targets, we only do a backup direct to the drives. Each Server has 13 Drives but 1 is a Year backup, so it keeps 4 years of Data
