Surprised that didn't dig the road a bit deeper rather than raising the bridge

They only put metal shims between the pillars and the beam and sloped the rails up at each side... could have done that for a few more inches. Lot easier than digging the road as they would have had to redo all the pillars that way

This is one they dug the road lower in the New Forest, the railway above it is the Weymouth to Waterloo mainline, the road under it a long way round when closed....

A train? Those things all have to conform to a loading gauge, and don't vary their routes much. Not the drivers fault, but the idiot that picked the route.

Only 2 million damage? The train, the cars on it and the bridge! Surely more than that. Definitely not the driver’s fault for the route, but surely stopping when you know you have hit it is a no-brainer?!

We had a low bridge on the way into a huge industrial estate for years as a sole route in and out, used to get hit by lorries often. Thankfully it has been replaced with a dual carriage way avoiding the bridge.
