Dear All

 

We have just moved our staff Gmail accounts to [email protected] rather than [email protected]

 

Staff are now complaining that in the tab when they open gmail in the browser it now says

Inbox - [email protected] so students are seeing their first name.

 

All issues about not having email on the projector etc. aside is there anyway to change what appears in the browser tab?

You could get them to right-click the Gmail tab and select Pin. This will shrink the tab down like in the screenshot below.

The things teachers like to moan about and think are major pain points!

 

Is there anyway of changing the display name in Chrome, AD or on Chrome GPOs perhaps?

Love the fact they think no one knows their name.

 

When one was arguing this ridiculous point and showed them their full names in a local newspaper.

Deed Poll, get them all to change their first names to Mr, Ms or Mrs. Extra points to the bright spark that goes off script and gets it changed to Rev, Bishop, Rear Admiral or Lord.

I fail to see the issue around students knowing a teacher's first name - they should of course address teachers appropriately, but the mere knowledge isn't an issue. Unless I've missed some safeguarding point?

I changed all of their first names in AD as ‘Mr X’ ‘Mrs Y’ etc when I set up g Suite, as it just showed all users the full name and I know some staff are very fussy about it (the same ones who tippexed their ID badges!)

Well... with just a photo to a staff member the once, I proved to someone that I could find out about who this person was, where they worked, their facebook profile and info and their job and age etc. They were shocked.

I would strongly recommend that teachers use a fake surname on social media (or a middle name, etc.) and a non-obvious profile picture, as well as locking down who can contact them. Most do - I have many friends who are teachers and that is exactly what they do.

 

The only issue I could see is that it might cause mild disruption in class (e.g. "Oi sir so your first name is Morfin, that's real weird!").
