Bluetooth Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 (edited) Hello all I am looking to buy an entry level server for a school that has a VERY tight budget. We are currently updating the ICT suite that hasnt been updated for 6 or so years and currently has very old donated machines. Were installing a 660i smartboard with 8 up to date well specced machines and 2 printers. It would be a shame not to have a server watching over them all etc and providing the school with a superb asset in storage and backup solution none of which they have anyway I have been told they i can get a nicely specced Fuji Siemens Econel 100 server, it has a xeon 3350 processor, 2gb ram and 2x 160gb in RAID 1 for £499, and around £110 for server 2003 standard R2. Has anyone got any experience of the Fuji Siemens Econel 100 server? i have a HP ProLiant server that was bought in summer and its a beast, but it cost around £2500 and this school does NOT have this budget. £499 is stretching the budget! Elky Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 To be honest, you don't really need anything too powerful if its for 8 PCs I would probably suggest a glorified PC with maybe 4Gb RAM in and a couple of 500Gb SATA drives in. Maybe a Core 2 Quad CPU You should be able to get something like this, along with Windows Server for less than £500 I would imagine If you need any more help or info then give me a shout Regards
Bluetooth Posted May 15, 2008 Author Posted May 15, 2008 Well the spec i have been quoted is: Intel Xeon 3350 CPU 2gb Mem 2x 160gb HDD's in raid 1 all the usual gubbins for £499 i could probably build a server but tbh would rather it was built by a reputable company

jamesb Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 I just picked myself up two low-specced, but reasonable servers from Misco for around £600 (that also included an extra pair of 500GB drives and a few other toys). Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard goes to schools at about £56.80 according to my Pugh catalogue, and I wouldn't imagine 2003 would be more.

Inside, the build quality is good - nice tidy cables, tool-less components, one of those big hood jobbies to suck the warm air away from the processor, and a rather handy internal USB port to plug a standard USB drive into. -- David Hicks

Can take standard DDRII Memory, so 2x Kingston ValueRAM 2GB @£26.99 each = £53.98. Can't beat a HP with 3 Yr warranty with 4GB RAM for £173.97 exc.! I can guarantee that RAM KVR667D2N5 (ones linked above) will run with this server.. I am running it in my home config.. 1

HP Proliant ML110 G4 is also a good choice if you can get hold of one. They're usually around £110 ex VAT too.

FreeWill Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 (edited) I don't have any experience of modern Fujitsi Siemens servers, but in the past they haven't been built as well as HPs. IMO a Quad core would be overkill for 8 machines -assuming uses like file server, IIS use, etc. If you aren't keen on the AMD CPU in an ML115 you could go for an ML110 with Dual Core Xeon, as CPLTD says, they are great machines and you'd either save a load on the server or be able to add more disk space. I will second that. I installed one for a school i did a favor for. And the head requested this model. And was very surprised with how good the server was. When you first turn it on it sounds like it is going to take off. but after 20 seconds it is deadly silent.

There is nothing wrong with the build quality and are very capable servers. They are RAID capable. I have had many conversations with distributor's about moving away from HP but they can not beat the prices of the ML110 and do not under stand why they are so cheap.
