Hi, our school has been using softlink Alice library software since the 80's and I'm looking for recommendations for free or cheap library software that will work with a bar code scanner and work on windows.

Many thanks,

Shane

Libresoft Librarian (£295 + vat) schools and children love it. The software is cloud-based and allows unlimited users. Free migration from an existing system. Unparalleled support. Shout if you'd like to see a demo.

My 3 sites use this. As all you need is a browser, you can run something like Porteus Kiosk so that the "library computer" can't be used for anything else. Since doing that at 2 of the sites (I don't think the librarian at the other will grasp the need to use another machine for printing) I've had to look at one of them once - when the scanner was plugged into the network port (machine is wireless due to lack of network cabling to the library).

AT my last school we used Handy Library by Prima soft

seemed to work well as a basic system - no web access of stuff like that but easy enough to generate reports etc

Also helps that by installing a driver you can read the database from Access - with some knowledge of Access - and possibly SQL - you can easily extend it - I used this to do a mass update or users from SIMMS every September
