Library system - to be maintained by pupils

Hello,

 

I am investigating Library systems to be used in a small secondary school. We previously had a full-time Librarian who maintained an effective Alice system. The Library was then closed and the Librarian made redundant. A small selection of books have been relocated to a classroom which we are turning into a Library style resource room over the summer. Are there any 'simple' library systems that any of you use that can be maintained by students (with supervision) so they can check the books in and out themselves.

LibreSoft was a sensible price, not too many over complicated bells and whistles and a nice simple interface. Runs from the cloud so no local setup needed. We didn't go for it as the Librarian here wanted some features it didn't have but had good feedback from people on here about it.

Libresoft is what we use and are very happy with it. Nice and simple, easy to give pupils access to return and issue books without access to the other bits.

It surprises me when schools get rid of their libraries. Although books aren't the "in-thing" these days. Our library in one school had an IT suite upstairs. I helped them get a projector and a screen installed for downstairs for world book day, they used it for various events and to show film club etc. We modernised the library to that point it wasn't simply abandoned and gotten rid of like a few schools I know have done. They had a TV with some digital signage on which was used for a while for book reviews etc.

 

The library should be a place for students to go study, use a computer or tablet etc. They've been the foundation of knowledge for centuries and will still exist in one form or another.

Another vote for Libresoft. Works well at all 3 of my schools. Trialled it on Porteus Kiosk (so the terminal is uber locked down) at one, and hope to move the others to the same setup soon.

 

Also another register of shock that a school has closed down its library.

Another happy Libresoft customer here.

 

They'll be a lot of schools no doubt reinstating their libraries - as the new Ofsted framework mentions reading quite a bit and will probably be a key focus moving forward.
