Ubuntu is a great distro to get your toes wet.

SUSE is a bit more polished for enterprise use, but Ubuntu is 'better' for standalone / new users trying it out.

I've tested Ubuntu, SuSE and Mandriva in the last couple of months. Out of the 3, the one I find the best is Ubuntu, every time.

It is stable, well supported, and fully featured. Also good as a server in its Server LTS form.

However, the other 2 are both superb too. Just not as good as Ubuntu.

My Favourites are:

Fedora Core 8 for web servers, etc

Ubuntu is a cracking first time distro which i have on my laptop, even got my partner using it!!

Most of the help you will get on here will be on Ubuntu and debian. Theres alot of people who use other distros but id guess most prefer to talk about them on more specialised forums.

Ubuntu 8 will do most things a newbie will use straight out of the box, and any others with only a few commands.

Ubuntu for first time users is great....if you wanted to dive in at the deep end with something Unix-based but not Linux....take a looksee into FreeBSD....not so great for desktops in my opinion but it's brilliant for servers. There's a few books on Amazon that are great. That's how I got into FreeBSD.

I have just setup a group of computers with ubuntu was a nice easy install.

I would now like to set up a server running mysql php with HESK helpdesk software.

Any advice on what i should look into?

It's very easy to do. Only problem you may run into is hardware compatibility. Also you may need extra php modules to run the web software you want to install. Give it a go and post if you get stuck.

Ubuntu is great for the beginner. The new version is meant to be even more user friendly.

I use ubuntu on my laptop just coz it was a quick and simple install but for the desktops / servers I use gentoo.

totally agree.

I started thinking about Linux when I saw some compiz vids on youtube. Thought that looked cool, and got myself Kubuntu.

needed to reinstall it once, as I managed to ruin my system by installing gnome-desktop and then using apt-get autoremove hehe but basically, every minute spent on fixing and playing around with Linux is worth the time.

right now i managed to get it under control, with Compiz and AWN working perfectly (almost) on Kubuntu, and I know a load more about computers than I used to.

i dont even use windows anymore.

question: why would i ever want to use another distro?

Nor me. RPM based distros seem to have so many more problems with dependencies than deb based ones. I'll stick with my ubuntu :) And fedora is missing features that are now present in Ubuntu - such as on demand plugin installation (flash etc...).

I agree with localzuk.

I've always experienced more problems with RPM distros over Deb/Ubuntu. Does Fedora still use Yum? That sucks too and is incredible slow. Apt on the other hand is fantastic.

I just migrated our really old email server from CentOS to Ubuntu+Zimbra; and now only have a single CentOS server running. Mainly because it aint broke so I'm not fixing it ;)

I have Ubuntu on my home desktop and Centos on the server! Both seem ok to me. Debian derived stuff is known for stabilty (although Ubuntu is not as strict and bring out more cutting edge s/w) and Centos is from an enterprise OS anyway (and is very stable).

Who cares, Use what you get on with! :)

Ubuntu.. easier for the desktop I guess
