Gongalong Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 Hi folks, Any recommendations for gaffer tape? Something to tape cables to a floor, that ideally comes off with the minimum of mess. Thanks
hardtailstar Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 we use this one Although we have bought cheaper stuff and thats been fine. 1
Arthur Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 Same as @hardtailstar, although I purchased ours from Amazon since it is cheaper... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006MKBVNM 1

AJWhite1970 Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 We get ours from here for no other reason than we have an account with them and it always turns up next day https://cpc.farnell.com/c/tools-maintenance/adhesives-sealants-tapes/tape/gaffer-duct-tape 1
steveg Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 I get the screwfix own brand stuff and never really had a problem with it. Cheap and can go and get it if I need some. https://www.screwfix.com/p/cloth-tape-27-mesh-black-50mm-x-50m/5201v 1
Andrew_C Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 3M stuff is fine for general purpose. If you want to tune your choice - Le Marke do a variety of different tack / strength / colours. 1
dhicks Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 Any recommendations for gaffer tape? Something to tape cables to a floor, that ideally comes off with the minimum of mess. We buy ours in bulk (box of 24 rolls) from Flints Theatrical Chandlers: https://www.flints.co.uk/pdfcatalogue/adhesivetapes.pdf Flints do an assortment of handy widgets, useful for stage-related jobs but often handy for general use. 1
SamanthaD Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 I always used to buy bulk from Stage Electrics - mainly as I hate the cheap stuff as it's too sticky and never rips properly and leaves a mess everywhere. Love the new fluorescent gaffa that's available now though, great for cable labels! 1
Meldrew Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 We aren't allowed to use duct tape on our floors. It apparently damages the polish. We only use silage tape that is completely plastic and comes away without taking the polish too presumably. Meldrew 1
eraser Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 Advance AT175 Gaffa - proper stage tape, designed to not leave residue. (Duct tape =/= Gaffa tape) 1
Gongalong Posted June 24, 2019 Author Posted June 24, 2019 We've got a fancy new floor where I need to apply the tape, which is part of my concern. I will avoid the painted lines though.
Steve21 Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 Depending on how long the runs are have you considered using a proper cable cover/mat (rubber thingy). If it's going to be often used, and a new floor etc, can easily pick it up for £4-5 a metre and obviously reusable/no mess at all etc Steve 1
Gongalong Posted June 24, 2019 Author Posted June 24, 2019 It's a temporary 20m run, so pretty long. Just wanted to make sure I got the right tape to stick it down with, as this is a first for me.
SamanthaD Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 No way it can be run up high on the wall? Few nails into door frames and a few temporary screws?
Gongalong Posted June 25, 2019 Author Posted June 25, 2019 Nope, it's pretty much 20m across the hall where I need to run it, so has to go straight on the floor.
Andrew_C Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 Someone makes a tape witha pocket in the middle for your cables. Means you don't end up with a sticky residue on them. I'll think... 1
SamanthaD Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 Is this something you do a lot, or just a one off? I'm wondering if it might be better to get some proper rubber cable protector if it's a regular use case, that won't stick to the floor at all and still gives you what you need. Expensive outlay at first but on a 20m run you'll be going through 2 rolls for 5 events, so may pay for itself. 1
Gongalong Posted June 26, 2019 Author Posted June 26, 2019 Good point. This could well become at least an annual thing.
SamanthaD Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 Also means that your supply of Gaffa doesn't get "borrowed" for every other job under the sun. I always kept my supply under lock and key! 1
RichCowell Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 Someone makes a tape witha pocket in the middle for your cables. Means you don't end up with a sticky residue on them. I'll think... They do - that's what we use on events now - https://www.lemark.co.uk/hazard-safety-tapes/slipway-cable-cover-tunnel-tape/ Not the cheapest, but does the job nicely... It's cheaper if you buy it in bulk too - if using it often... 1
Jawloms Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 You want a GaffGun! Actually you probably don't as from what I remember they are really expensive! 1
SamanthaD Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 To be fair I'm amazed no-one has said anything about this yet.... EDIT.... I'll get my coat..... 2
