Student Desktops: Room Number + Number i.e. B4-01

Staff Laptops: StaffLap-001

In edu it was

Classroom PC - Room name+S+00 - so room name being say A1 would be A1S01

Teachers machine - Room name+Teacher would be A1Teacher

Laptop trolleys - Department+S+00 - ScienceS01

 

Non edu - building name-AssetTag-Device type

e.g. hq-123456-PC or hq-123456-LT

 

Servers named sensibly - If its a DC, it has DC in the name, Database likewise. All well with having documentation, but whoever takes it over after you is going to hate you for having to try and remember what each name you thought was funny for a server does. One of the schools I took over a few years ago had 3 servers - named after cities - and was very glad when I was able to ditch 2 of them to a sensible naming scheme

I Did once use Babel, Eiffel and London because they were towers...

In real life we use LTxx PCxx and similar so that they sort nicely in spiceworks

Seems reasonable, over the holidays I'm going to rename every PC using character names from Game of Thrones - reckon I should have enough unique names!

If anyone were to ask if this was intentional the reply could be "Yes, I did it on porpoise!"

Seems as reasonable as servers named after favoured politicians and desktops named after LoTR characters...

At work hosts are named after Simpson characters. In schools they are a bit more mundane. DC01 etc.

PCs are named after the function of the room shortened to three characters, followed by the room number (if it's the only one, it gets a '01'), followed by the number of that PC in the room, clockwise from the door. Teacher PCs are always '1'. e.g. Maths 1 with only one PC in would be MAT101. ICT 2 with 31 PCs in would be ICT201 (teacher PC), then ICT202 (computer closest to the door), ICT203 (next computer clockwise) up to ICT231.

At my old work place we used the following format:

 

"Type of Machine" - "Building Letter" - "Room Acronymn" - "Computer number"

 

e.g : WDT-D-APR-02

 

WDT: Windows DeskTop

D : DeMontfort Building

APR : Art Prep Room

 

 

If it was a windows laptop then: WLT,

Apple Laptop : ALT

Apple IPad : AIP

 

etc

 

We always tried kept the Room acronymn to 3 letters.

e.g D3 : D03

Principal's Office : POF or PRI

Main Office : MOF

I can see why you would do that. I made all of the teachers machines end with '01' so that I could have a group in Impero that excluded ICT101 and included ICT1?? to get all the machines in ICT1 in the same place and it also means that the teacher isn't locking their own PC out when they do a screen blank to get student's attention.

We got around this by creating one group which IT would access then created one without the teacher pc and set the teacher to only access that group.

 

So "Computer room 1" will be accessible by us IT but teacher can only see "Computer Room 1 (Teacher)"

Laptops sequentially numbered, in groups, so all of one type are grouped together. Number matches asset tag. Desktops sequentially if other people move them around, or room number/name if not.

We've done various things across schools.

Roomname-4Digit Asset Tag ( IT1-5964 ) / Laptops as StaffCode-Asset Tag ( CST-4875 )

 

I now work for a trust that does it Schoolname-Roomname-Number ( DUS-G104-01 ) / Laptops as (DUS-LAP-CST)

I'm curious, How do your task sequences / MDT thingys identify which name to use? the main reason we use asset tags, as its easy to pull in a sccm task sequence. when imaging do you have to be at the unit and manually type the name in? do you ever get spelling typos?

I use TSGui - it allows me to type in the name, though it does present me with the current name, if it's a rebuild. I also have a drop down list to select room, which becomes a variable within the TS. This allows me to add the machine to the correct OU and install room specific software within the TS. If there is a typo I just wait for the machine to finish building and rename it.
