minimoo Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 There was also a BSOD bug in rdbss.sys with offline files if the file cache got full in some scenario. I managed to raise that with MS at the time; it was early windows 10 aka May 2017, but workaroundsd at the time were to increase cache size, decrease amount of data or use workfolders. I started making the switch to work folders at that point. I've been slowly moving to work folders as we've moved staff laptops from win7->win10

As much as I really, really, really want to come to the defence of Microsoft and say "they are brilliant, Windows 10 is the best ever OS ever" they are making it really hard for me to say that. * dodgy updates * broken updates * features that were fully working are now being broken All part of the plan to go full office365 and cloud based. The UK is really going to suffer with the lack of decent broadband infrastructure still. Never mind rolling out 5G, there are STILL areas of the UK with little-no 2G mobile coverage. Oh no, this is going to be fun I wonder how this is going to affect a lot of RM users, WE use offline files on some of our stuff! 1

free780 Posted June 9, 2019 Posted June 9, 2019 I've found offline files to be not great. Saying that moving GBs of shared files to SharePoint Online takes time and crucially getting staff trained and on board.

It also works like the older sync clients for OneDrive and Google Drive, as in files are not on demand, they are synchronised. Which means you have to make sure everything is bitlockered properly. Which the last time I checked you can't backup the keys in standard AD only Azure AD. Problem we have here is that we are striving to be agnostic as much as possible, so the majority of our stuff is done in G Suite (as we find Classroom the better product for us) which naturally lent itself to drive. But we do use Office 365 for emails, and ADFS for authentication with the Adobe suite! More research needed me feels.

BKGarry Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 @Alis_Klar The unstable isn't due to it's syncing (TBH offline folders has been fine for us for years and years) it is more the extra functionality, like the always on, where I know schools have had to go for Azure Proxies for it, to keep the sync alive when working over the web, which it should do with just WAP and NPS but it doesn't seem to. It is more a completely different way of working, I will be looking at ODfB and Sharepoint but if I do that, I am going to want Veem backup for office 365 and then you end up backing it up back onsite, kinds defeats the point!
DrCheese Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 The only clue is some text purporting to be from Microsoft support staff warning that "Office from [the] start was designed to be a single client Productivity suite" before explaining that the suite has "issues" with folder redirection and "Microsoft cannot guarantee that folder redirection will always work." er... that thing we've been doing since 2001 & is massively deployed is now "Not Guaranteed" even if you stay on the already existing LTSC versions of office? Right....

mavhc Posted June 21, 2019 Author Posted June 21, 2019 Long term they want to kill windows server and move you to azure ad, with your files on onedrive/sharepoint, which is why they upped the price. Why only get the software profits when you can also get the hw profits?

The instability of Windows 10 and now this, just more reason for us to move to Google Apps as much as possible. We moved everyone to Google Apps back in 2012 and made our shared drive read-only. Microsoft Office is mainly used for legacy documents/presentations, communications with the LA and exports from SIMS.
