Weird to hear people call the hikvision software good, what are you using? What version?

 

I mostly just bypass it all

 

The stuff on the cameras is good, the stuff on the NVR is awful, is basically my experience.

BlueIris is an open source solution. Just buy cheap Chinese PoE cameras off eBay and plug them in.

With modern networking? You'll barely notice it in the stats. 1080p/30 fps is between 3Mbps and 6Mbps depending on camera and how they do things. You'd need 166 cameras to saturate a 1Gbps link. Not many schools running that many. They're usually spread out too, so not all on one link somewhere.

We installed cheap switches in locations near the cameras and essentially built a seperate CCTV network.

 

Works great too when there are network issues as the CCTV will continue to operate, and vice versa.

I have two small sites between 10-16 cameras.

 

One uses Ubiquiti and works great, easy to set up and the principle has easy web access to check any incidents.

 

The other is a hikvision setup which works fine but the remote iVMS software is too technical for that principle to use. He also hate’s the software on the nvr. That would be my only reason for not recommending it.
