VDSL Router for home (that's not pants?)

I'm getting fibre this week and poking around with the router I've been sent, I want something else after I've confirmed the line works using their kit.

 

I'm looking at Draytek Vigor, TP-Link and Billion. Is there anyone else I should consider?

 

Need:

 

• Reliable
  
• VLAN support
  
• Regular software updates

I'm using a Linksys AC1900. It works great with my 74MB fibre, still gets updates, and is OpenWRT compatible for when it doesn't. VLAN compatible (including VLAN tagging), QOS compatible, supports a guest network (if that's your thing, which it shouldn't be ) and it can broadcast its 2.4GHz and 5GHz separately (but still routes between them). I have zero complaints and would happily recommend it, but there's probably a newer model since I bought mine.

I am using the one my ISP sent (Andrews & Arnold) - a ZyXEL VMG 3529-B10B. Solid as a rock.

I'm using a Draytek for my copper VDSL, it's a highly configurable and very reliable router.

 

Way better than a Home Hub.

I've used DrayTeks since 2006 and experienced them a lot in SOHO scenarios as part of my role back then. They are very reliable, had mine since 2011 and not missed a beat and has a lot of features

 

The only slight annoying thing is the amount of reboots for changes and the firewall could be easier to config but then I am used to enterprise firewalls.

I have been recommended DrayTek modem or a BT Openreach Huawei modem then into a router of your choice. I've got one going into a Netgate PFsense box at my brothers (or will have in a few weeks).

I’m using the virgin supplied router in modem only mode and a Mikrotik router. The virgin box (v2) has been pretty solid. The Mikrotik not missed a beat. I have a my main, cctv Vlan, guest network (wireless) vlan and it runs just great.

I've had BT Fibre Infinity 2 for several years, started off with the separate vdsl model and bt router never had an issue. Renewed my contract and they sent me a smart hub to replace the 2 devices for 1. Never had any issues with that either. The only difference i found is that download speeds are slightly better having the separate vdsl model.

BT Infinity never been down in the last 6 years i've had it (run own servers with monitoring).

Depends who your with but never had any issues with ISP supplied kit.

However, i did disable the wireless and go for a Ubiquiti wireless point which gives better signal reach.

The supplied router is a Vodafone-branded Huawei 963168-something and it's hateful - either because the ISP has deployed a stupid config or (more likely, given the typos and spelling mistakes littered through the UI/event logs) it's a cheap PoS.

I use the basic copper router/modem PlusNet supplied with the WiFi switched off, and then i use a Unifi AP for my wireless which works fine. But i suppose if your router is that bad, thats not much help. I bought my AP second hand on eBay for about 20 quid so it was a big improvement for not a lot of money. Edited May 16, 2019 by Patrick

Meraki gave me a free AP for attending a webinar a while back.. Still haven't found a use for it though since the router I have is fine..

That's pretty sweet! The PlusNet router wifi i have is absolute garbage but the actual internet connection is stable, so it was a pretty cheap fix.

I recently moved over to TalkTalk and got rid of their supplied modem/router and use DrayTek Vigor 130 modem and an ASUS router.

 

When I was with Sky I used their hub in modem/bridge mode and used the ASUS router.
