Arthur Posted April 16, 2019 Posted April 16, 2019 https://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2019/4/16/18401209/sony-playstation-5-details-8k-graphics-ray-tracing-ssds-ps4-backward-compatibility We’ve known for a while that Sony is working on its next-generation PlayStation console — call it the PlayStation 5 for lack of a better name — but today, we got the first real details on what to expect from the new hardware, thanks to an interview at Wired. Specifically, Sony is promising that the PS5 will support 8K graphics, 3D audio, super fast SSDs, and backwards compatibility with existing PlayStation 4 games. According to Mark Cerny, who served as the lead system architect for the PS4, the new console isn’t just a spec-boosted upgrade of the PS4, like the PS4 Pro was. There’s entirely new hardware inside the PlayStation 5, including an eight-core CPU based on AMD’s third-gen Ryzen line built on the chip company’s latest 7nm Zen 2 process and a custom GPU based on AMD’s Radeon Navi hardware, which will bring ray-tracing graphics to a game console for the first time. The end result of all those hardware improvements: the PS5 will support 8K graphics, assuming you’ve got a TV that supports that kind of resolution. Sony is also putting particular emphasis on 3D audio for the PlayStation 5. The new AMD chip apparently includes a custom unit just for that, which Sony hopes will lead to more immersive gaming both on TV speakers and headphones. The other big change coming to the PlayStation 5 is the replacement of the hard drive with an SSD, which Sony promises will improve load time and gameplay beyond anything possible with a hard drive. (In a demo described by Wired, fast-traveling in Spider-Man for the PS4 took only 0.8 seconds on an early devkit for the PS5, compared to 15 seconds on a PS4). Other details that Sony revealed about the PS5 include the fact that it’ll be backwards compatible with existing PlayStation 4 games. Unlike the PS3 to PS4 transition, the PS4 and PS5 share similar architectures, making cross-generational support much easier. There will still be physical copies of games to buy, not just downloads (although Sony has yet to reveal if these will be Blu-ray discs or something more exotic). The company is also promising that when the PS5 does roll around, it’ll be a slower transition, with multiple new games releasing for both the PS4 and PS5 — at least at the start. 1

flyinghaggis Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 (edited) Sony just unveiled what appears to be the final design for the PS5 'Dualsense' controller https://blog.us.playstation.com/2020/04/07/introducing-dualsense-the-new-wireless-game-controller-for-playstation-5/ Not a huge departure from the PS4 Dualshock as far as I can see though the inclusion of a microphone will be handy. The "adaptive triggers" (L2/R2) with variable resistance sound interesting. Actually, I say not a big change but it's actually probably the most Sony have altered the design/style of the controller since the first dualshock released in 1997 so maybe this is a major update in relative terms! If it ain't broke don't fix it I guess Edited April 7, 2020 by flyinghaggis
Arthur Posted May 13, 2020 Author Posted May 13, 2020 (edited) Unreal Engine 5 empowers artists to achieve unprecedented levels of detail and interactivity, and brings these capabilities within practical reach of teams of all sizes through highly productive tools and content libraries. Join Technical Director of Graphics Brian Karis and Special Projects Art Director Jerome Platteaux (filmed in March 2020) for an in-depth look at "Lumen in the Land of Nanite" - a real-time demonstration running live on PlayStation 5 showcasing two new core technologies that will debut in UE5: Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry, which frees artists to create as much geometric detail as the eye can see, and Lumen, a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes. Also present in the demo are next-gen features already available in Unreal Engine 4.25, such as Niagara VFX improvements, Chaos physics and destruction, animation system enhancements, and audio advancements. Unreal Engine 4.25 also includes support for next-gen consoles. Learn more at unrealengine.com/blog/a-first-look-at-unreal-engine-5 Edited May 13, 2020 by Arthur
Dos_Box Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 (edited) The first reveal is scheduled for 9pm (BST)/1pm (PST) tonight - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-53000013 You can watch it live here: By all accounts both the PS 5 and Xbox Series X will have hefty price tags and Sony is apparently holding out to see if Microsoft will announce pricing first, but it's rumoured that we shall be looking at around £700! Hopefully this is a marketing play to make £600 seem more resonable when they finally let us know the real cost. Edited June 11, 2020 by Dos_Box

If both of them don't announce a price mark around £450-£500 at the most, I'll be absolutely gobsmacked. Anything more than that, and they'll both fail miserably over Christmas and into 2021. It'd hand a huge opportunity to Google to heavily promote Stadia as just as high powered as PS5 and Xbox Series X and only costing a monthly fee/free if you only want 1080p that's for sure! Dos_Box Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Some very nice looking games there (I really like the look of Stray - you play a cat by the looks of it). Just a shame the stream is in 720p and is still having image quality issues. 1
localzuk Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 I'm not so sure a price of £700 would be that bad for them. People pay £1000 for a phone these days. I wonder if they'll follow in Microsoft's footsteps and offer a monthly purchase plan for it?
Arthur Posted June 12, 2020 Author Posted June 12, 2020 (edited) Here's your first look at the PlayStation 5 console Sony has finally unveiled its PlayStation 5 console. The sleek and curved box will come in two flavours - one with a disc drive, and one without. Meet the PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. No pricing or launch date details were announced today. The white-coloured console can be orientated horizontally or vertically. Both versions have a USB and USB-C port in the front. Also shown: a controller charging station which docks two DualSense pads, a headset featuring 3D audio support and noise-cancelling microphones and a media remote with built-in microphone. Personally I prefer to simpler (and smaller) design of the Xbox Series X. Edited June 12, 2020 by Arthur

DJ-1701 Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Stray is by far the most appealing game to me from those shown to me, but looks like it will be on PS4 as well. Never played Ratchet and Clank, but looks interesting... even if I do keep on thinking of Ratchet as the ever smart and cool Rescue Ranger...
3s-gtech Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 (edited) Sony (and MS) can sell these at cost or near-cost due to their licensing, knowing that high entry price is an unnecessary barrier. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it at the ‘traditional’ £500 mark. AMD will be able to produce the chips for them at a very strong price as we can see from Ryzen. Much as I love PC gaming, I’ve always had a PS, and I can’t see myself holding out that long if they can keep the variety and quality up. Lack of Uncharted will always be a downer, I bought my PS4 for that! Recently played through Ratchet and Clank - A Crack in Time on PS3. Absolutely superb. Edited June 12, 2020 by 3s-gtech
flyinghaggis Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 (edited) PS5 Pro Few memes for fun. I'll still probably pre-order one when sales go live depending on the launch titles available. Any fellow Sony Pony's contemplating joining the PS5 herd later this year? Edited June 12, 2020 by flyinghaggis
paulkerton Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 That industrial design of Sony's is plain ugly. Spider-Man : Miles Morales intrigues me, as I was a big fan of the PS4 game (in fact, it was the reason I bought one, and its the only game I really played on it!) but other than that, none of these games really intrigued me all that much. Especially that GTA 5 announcement. An 8 year old game being re-released again on it's third platform in a row and triple dipping me for the privilege? I'll pass for now. Until the pricing comes out, I'm going to stick with what I have.
Arthur Posted June 16, 2020 Author Posted June 16, 2020 The PlayStation 5 looks to be the biggest game console in decades Last week, Sony finally gave us our first look at the unique design of the PlayStation 5 hardware, leading to plenty of Internet mockery (the company also showed some PS5 games, I guess). For all the ethereal coolness of hardware shots shown on an amorphous white background, though, Sony's promo images didn't provide much external context for judging the actual size of the PlayStation 5 box (and Sony hasn't provided official measurements yet, either, in response to our queries). That hasn't stopped Internet sleuths from figuring out their best estimates of the PS5's size, though. Reddit user GREB07 was among the first to judge the dimensions by using the standard sizes of the disc drive and USB ports as reference. Users on ResetEra did a similar analysis, using the size of the d-pad on the PS5 DualSense controller (which is presumably the same size as on the PS4 controller) as additional context. Twitter user EvilBoris and the folks over at IGN added their own estimates using similar methodologies. The precise results vary a bit depending on the source—and based on precisely where you start and end the measurements on the PS5's wavy design. That said, the consensus estimate puts the PS5 at anywhere from 15 inches to 16 inches wide (all measurements in this piece assume a horizontal orientation for the console, for simplicity). That's easily the largest single dimension for a video game system on record, outpacing the 12.8-inch width of the PS3 or the 12.6-inch width of the original Xbox. The PS5 also stands a few inches wider than the upcoming Xbox Series X, which runs 11.85 inches in its longest dimension, according to Digital Foundry. But the Series X ends up more short and squat, with a 6-inch height (and depth) that easily overwhelms the estimated 3.5- to 4-inch height of the PS5 at its tallest point (the version without a disc drive is a little shorter).
Theblacksheep Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Stray and Little Devil inside look great and are a bit different. It'll be good to see what they do with TLOU2 and 3rd party games running in 4k/60. Guessing £499 for diskless and £550 for disk.
Arthur Posted June 17, 2020 Author Posted June 17, 2020 Guessing £499 for diskless and £550 for disk. UHD Blu-ray drives are expensive so I reckon the price difference between the disc and disc-less versions will be more like £100. The higher price would also force more people to buy the disc-less version (enabling Sony to make more profit on the games).
ICTDirect_Dave Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 They're not cheap, but you can buy an internal drive for around £70. I'd imagine MS and Sony's costs are much less than that. What drives the price for sony will be the fact that the Series X will ship with the 4K Bluray. Hell the XBox One X shipped with one as standard. I think this will force Sony to match the Series X with the BluRay Model and undercut with the cheaper version. Of course, when undercutting they'll lose money as they'll have to reduce the price by far more than the cost of the drive.
