Don't you love PAT testers?

 

Found a number of these today (not just 1 or 2 either).

When I was working on a short term contract at a school the IT manager insisted on the PAT testers being supervised when in any of the IT rooms or store rooms because he once found one (pay per item of course) happily testing a box full of euro power leads stored until he found a way of recycling them!

I found a PAT test label on a unpowered USB hub.

Its clear that anything below 50V doesn't need PAT testing. This is incompetence or padding, either way you should refuse payment. We had someone PAT test all our laptops! PSU yes but not the laptop.

We had the laptop testing too which I complained about and the HT was brought in but the PAT testers just kept repeating it was policy to test them.

 

Anyway, the following year the PAT testers were caught on CCTV just sticking labels on things without even a visual check. Needless to say they never returned.

Ahh - that word policy

 

People throw that word around but what it actually means is simply that they have decided to do that and have probably written it down

 

The important point is what the reason for the policy is - and does it make sense - and is it legal

 

for example - I could have a policy where I only pay people in March

 

so - Great - thanks for doing that building work for me - I'd pay you immediately but I'm afraid that we have a policy to only pay in March because that's when my birthday is - so as soon as March comes round again I'll pay you

Nah - policy is a wallpaper word - there to cover up cracks in the argument sometimes

 

just as Ofsted say you have to have a bevaviour policy - but they will still check it makes sense - just having it isn't enough

Ask them for the results of that cable and what test/inspection that did on the cable.

 

We gave up with employing PAT testing companies when they PAT tested/inspected plastic monitor stands - the CEO and engineer came in to answer questions about all the ones the somehow tested/inspected and neither could give an answer to why they had tested lumps of plastic! Now we do the PAT testing ourselves - it takes longer but it's done properly so we're safer than we've ever been.

Also there's no rules about how often things need to be PAT tested

 

What I have found is Toshiba laptops using hdmi interfere with the public band radios we have.

According to the regulations, laptops should be inspected not tested (as most will have a label on them saying that they are officially ITE) and then a sticker saying if it passed or failed stuck on to it.

 

A PAT tester should only test what the company/school wants them to test and if you have decided not to follow what the IET says then that's completely up to you, not for the PAT testers to tell you what to test!
